Posted 6 months ago Today I was driving to my boyfrends house and a car in the lane to my left hit his turn as he was coming over. I had no reaction time and was going 60mph. I slammed my breaks and my horn. He continued to the shoulder and my front passenger side bumper hit his rear driver side bumper. Nothing happened, as in nobody was injuryed and i heard a scrape but i thought it was my bumper on the raised shoulder. Well i didnt stop because i didnt think hit him... well When i got to my destination, i looked and realized we scraped, and it wasnt the shoulder..... Anyway my bf asked if i was concerned about a hit and run arrest and at the time i didnt realize it was an accident... IDk what to do...I thought about going to the PD but if i do that.. then is it self incrimination? And now im in trouble cause i was concerned... or wait and see what happens... :( Im scared because im 2 months pregnant and i cant have anything on my record because the army reserves is all i have and this could ruin my income.... What should I do... |

| Posted 6 months ago A hit and run is not a major offense. It should not ruin money from being in the military. I have also never arrested anybody for it. A citation and court date are given. Not calling makes you look a lot more at fault than going down and explaining the incident. The other guy must have felt the collision as well. Instead of hoping nothing happens, show some character and explain your part of the crash. Whether it was your fault or not, it is against the law (at least here in Montana) to fail to report a crash. Just do it. |

| Posted 6 months ago You WON'T be arrested for a hit and run unless it was a P.I. or a fatality or you were drinkjing and/or high,or driving during a period of suspension.Having said that ,in the states where I lived and worked as an officer and deputy, this is the law. 1., Failure to stop immediately is a traffic offense called -Duty to stop in the event of a collision 2.Failure to report in twelve hours is a traffic offense called-Failure To Report 3.Failure to report withen 24 hours of said colliosion is a more serious traffic offense called"Leaving the Scene. These offences will probably vary some from state to state.I believe you have already received good advise from the other officers.I would definately report it.Furthermore it only stands to reason that if you are insured and wish your insurance company to pay for said damages the first thing they will do is demand a "POLICE REPORT" |

12/15/12 AD I just have to........ Has the intelligence level dropped significantly in this country? Your post reeks of 1st grade grammar on one hand. On the other, when you realized that the other vehicle hit you, contacting the police and doing the right, honorable and ethical thing was out of the question? How can you incriminate yourself when you were not at fault? Oh boy! ""Life is a storm.. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes"

| Posted 6 months ago Call the PD and report it. Like it was said earlier, this should not affect your Military Reserves. Its a minor traffic incident, with the exception of Failure to Stop After Accident (as it's called here in Ohio). Failure to Stop is a misdemeanor of the 1st degree. Contact the PD that has jurisdiction and explain your side of the story, whether the other person did or not. |

Part of that is the wonderful world of texting (unlike the Wonderful World of Disney that was on TV) and IM. Some of it is the wrong grammar, due to our Educational System or Lack-of-Educational System. Just sayin.... By the way for Clarification; Wonderful World of Disney was before my time. And as such, I wouldn't know it came on right after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (with Marlin Perkins). (bwahahahahahaha) |

| Posted 6 months ago 12-15-2012 19:06 EST Am I reading this wrong? I mean, why wouldn't you want to call the police and have this reported if it wasn't your fault? Makes no sense to me. Certainly for Insurance, I would want to have reported this with the police so I could send off a report as to why I needed to get my car fixed. Just sayin'! | Posted 6 months ago To the original poster - you have some sort of misunderstanding about self incrimination. If you are being questioned and tou think your answers might incriminate you, you 'plead the 5th'. This means you invoke the 5th amendment to the constiution, the one involing self incrimination, will leave looking up the 5th amendment as an exercise for the reader. Off topic Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom a show where Marlin Perkins narrated while he had his sidekick, Steve do the dirty work, I.e. "Steve, wrestle that alligator while i explain what is happening" Most of us old farts know what I mean. |

| Posted 6 months ago Oh, and to the OP. The common sense response would have been to call the police the moment you noticed the damage. It's never too late to call though. |

Part of getting old is memory problems. Steve, Jim, he was still the sidekick who did the dirty work. |
