Have a degree in hand before you start a law enforcement career. It is short sighted to think you can be successful without one in this day and age.

Corrections is not for everyone. You either like it or you don't. Don't be complacent in your job!

In the world of law enforcement those with more education will be considered before those with less. Important traits to have are common sense, integrity, empathy, humility, and a strong voice. Also be firm, fair, consistent and have a good BS meter.

Keep your eyes open (especially the ones in the back of your head ! ), NEVER NEVER NEVER do "favors" for the inmates. That is a slippery slope and before you know it you are doing things you would have never thought you would do.  Watch the older CO's you can tell who the inmates respect and who they don't. The one's they respect are the ones who are fair, firm and don't play around. Don't take what they say personally and don't let them engage you in ANYTHING !

Good Luck. Like someone else said, this job is not for everyone. The guys and gals that work on the inside have my respect. I know I couldn't !!!!!

While not really advice, a calender only measures age.  Maturity is only loosely related to age, maturity is what you want.  There are people who display maturity at age 19, others who lack maturity at age 49.
