Hey yall its been awhile.  Has anyone or any department have any problems with nepotism or family members working together?  Heres my situation:

My brother is the Sheriff of my Department.  We had a LT position open up and me and 2 other guys put in for it.  Due to my brother being Sheriff he stayed out of the whole process.  Undersheriff set up all testing and the oral board consisting of people outside of the department.  The other 2 canidates backed and I was the only person left.  I still had to go through the testing process.  The board still suggested me for the position.  The Undersheriff was in contact with POOL/PACT along with the DA the entire time.  The times comes for me to get promoted and the office that handles the payroll for the county is questioning the process of me getting promoted and wants an Attorney Generals opinion.

Any other department or people had any of these type of problems??

My agency requires a certain number of applicants to fill vacant "coveted" positions (we usually have no problem getting enough apps for promotions) and if they don't receive enough, they extend the submission period, more outreach, etc...not sure of the minimum number, but I think its three

So now, I guess I'd want to know out of 20 sworn...how many were even eligible to apply?  3, 4?  Did either of the two that backed out offer a reason?  Not that they'd have to, just wondering if it would help show they weren't discouraged, etc since I'm assuming that that is the concern for balking at your promotion

Sorry for your troubles.  Not sure what you could have done different, but hopefully the AG will do right by you

No matter what you do, there will always be a lingering sense of nepotism generated from somewhere. It's unavoidable... no matter what kind of hiring integrity was injected. The best you can do is not spend a lot of time justifying the promotion (if it happens). The bigger the story, the more you and your brother become suspect. Just say you went through the process like everyone else and say nothing more.

1 guy resigned and the other said he just wasnt ready for the job.  The person thats holding it up, I believe is doing it for personal reasons.  I have acted as Acting LT. several times and it was never a problem.  It sure is now.

All you can do is do the job to the best of your ability. There will always be someone ready to belittle whatever you do. As long as you AND your brother know that you would NEVER do anything to bring shame to the department your good.

My last position one of my dear friends became my supervisor. I made sure I busted my butt to hit all the marks we were supposed to hit. If anyone said well so and so lets Cat get away with stuff because they are friends. HIS boss knew they were full of poo !!!!

Oh, and REAL nepotism stinks !!! I worked for my dad for 1 yr. ARGUUUUUUUUUUUU !!!!!!!!!!

Its going to have MOJO attached no matter what. Despite what anyone says, they will always think thats how you got the job. Its human nature.

AKA Jealousy.

Good luck in getting this resolved quickly.

12-13-12:
As sarge said, if all of the protocos were followed and you were qualified for the job, having done it a few times at least and the AG says it's a go, no harm no foul. You deserve it and no matter what there is always going to be someone to claim otherwise. Don't make something out of nothing. Do right by the job and earn it...
