"But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for Himself." Psalm 4:3

"Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge. I say to the LORD, 'You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You.'" Psalm 16:1,2

It's interesting that David tells us in chapter four that God has set apart the godly for Himself (essentially preserving the godly as His own) and then asks God in chapter sixteen to preserve him. David already knew that God would and had preserved him, because he was righteous. But in his time of trial, he asked God to preserve him anyway. Why do you think he did that?

I think he did it for the same reason we do it today. God has given and still gives us promise after promise. And when we hit a trial, we ask Him for the very thing He has already promised us. It has to do with faith. If you can stand on God's promises, you don't have to continually ask Him for a word or a sign or confirmation. Just believe what He has already said. Like David, we should take refuge in our Lord.

David said he had no good outside of God. This incredibly accurate for all of us. The Word tells us that every good and perfect thing comes from the Father. We are nothing without God and David knew it well.
