Its been a long time since I was on thirds, but I used to get into traffic stops and try to dig stuff up. There's always something to do in the town I work in.

Put your hands up and back away from the computer, we have you covered. I am going out on a limb and guess you are very bored. Relax and take a deep breath.

Way back when I was on nights, I would drink alot of coffee and smoke (Finally managed to quit). As 36TR said, staying busy helps alot.

CAFFEINE!!!! LOL I"m not a cop but caffeine always helped me to stay awake, but I noticed the older I've gotten, the less it's helping.

I have found that having a sense of curiosity  goes a long way in keeping awake on the third shift.

Shaking door knobs and checking window on businesses kept me busy booking burglars.

I carried two thermoses to work and there is always something to do on that shift. You can rest assured that the vast majority of people driving through a residential area, slowly between 0100 to o400 are probably burglars.

Quit smoking or quit coffee, never smoked and managed to give up coffee (or other sources of caffine) for about a month , years ago, now they think coffee is not so bad so i try and hold it to around a quart a day ( and that is working days), mind you.   Drank more coffee when I used to work nights).

I restrict coffee -no more past 10AM. Then, on the times when I need to pull an all-nighter...like they say -

"Coffee past 4, sleep no more!"

I don't drink coffee or anything with caffeine, and I do fine. If I get tired, I will get out and walk around town, checking doors and windows of businesses.

Youtube and portable game players; then again I'm only a security guard of a near empty facility, so I can get away with it.  Went I on ride alongs though, me and the officer would go on security checks of places that have been burglarized, so that got us out of the car.  That, and we have tons of bars so there are always people to "take care of" up until 4am.

I quit smoking. I still love my coffee.

Getting out of the car and doing some light exercises. Not uncommon to find me doing pushup and stretching in a secure parking lot,... that is if you could find me. Church parking lots are handy.

Not too much coffee. Tea from a Thermos was good. At one point I drank too much coffee and then had to go to decaf.

Getting together with a trusted beat partner and simply talking. If you get overwhelmed with sleep, like if it overtakes you so you really are out of it, you might want to get together with a partner in a secure location and take a quick cat nap with your partner keeping watch and listening to the radio. I know this is sketchy and might raise some eyebrows. But what is better: Being monitored by a buddy for a few minutes or falling asleep at a stop light for a few minutes with no one watching your back. Of course staying active and doing stuff will usually suffice. But working nights, then going to court, or helping with the kids, or taking your car to get repaired or leaf blowers in your neighborhood or someone reroofing their house or or or can hijack your day-sleep. Make sure you are clearly talking to your supervisor if you really struggle with staying awake during a full night.

Avoid eating to compensate. You'll only grow out of your duy pants.

We had a quiet room at our agency where we could take a nap during our meal breaks or 15-minute '10-10'. It had a small bed and a very loud alarm clock. Only one person allowed in the quiet room at a time.

Some people are simply hardwired to be day people. Most folks can tolerate a short-short stint on graveyards. But living the life of an owl will take a toll on you unless you can sleep well during that day. I have found less than a handful of people who can work the boneyard for years on end.

Back in the day I gave a class about the proper way to sleep in a patrol vehicle, it was half joking and half serious. We had to wear our 50 mission crush head gear/bus driver hat. I told them to place it on their head and role the edge up in the window, it kept your head from bobing and people didn't realize you were sleeping. We would meet with a trusted partner and do as TheSarge said, it was better to grab a cat nap then to have an accident.
