My current employer (11 years total) is my concern.  It is a very small company with little to no quality management, and a nonexistant HR offering.  After talking with my co-workers, I am convinced that there is a very good chance that they will say almost anything to impede my progress into law enforcement.  So, is it early career suicide to decline contact with this employer?  Most department applications are so minimal, they do not offer any area for explanation into a "no" answer when posed with this question.

It is in your best interest to divulge this particular aspect of your life totally. You may not like your current employer however your background investigator IS going to want to speak to them. Good luck.

If you have been employed 11 years to me this shouts character. Once you execute the waiver your employer may show the background investigator your personnel jacket. If you have been disciplined reveal this to the agency. No one is perfect. I am curious why you feel your employer may attempt to impede your application. When I made application for the PD I spoke to the owner of the ambulance company which employed me and he was happy for me and assisted in my background by means of a letter of reference. Be certain you are not overthinking this. Good luck.

Chances are your background investigator will talk to him regardless. You should have a chance to explain during any interview process.

 This is a great question, and one I have struggled with myself. My last boss didn't know I existed, and I knew that would not help me when I applied to a department. I have good explanations for anything negative they might say if I would only have a chance to explain myself. Thankfully I haven't ran into any major problems with it yet, but I'd also love the advice of the more experienced LEO's here.

I always put to contact previous employers, sometimes with some explaination.  i worked for 2 companies that went out of business, in one the head of the company ended up in prison.  Despite these, I was still able to get  jobs as a LEO.  You might want to note in your application your concerns about your company.  Realize that if a company lies about an employee, the open themselves to legal actions.

I would say that if you have been employed there for eleven years and they give you a bad reference, the person investigating your background might come back and ask so why keep him for so many years if he was not a quality employee.

 As a background investigator, I would concur with what my colleagues are telling you.  I would want to know this information from you up front.  The fact that you have been there for such a long time speaks volumes but I would still want to talk to them.  It's not always the information received from the employer but the manner in which it is delivered.  Don't hide anything, it can only make it worse for you.  Good luck.

Thank you all for your responses.  I have already checked the yes box on all applications thus far.  Some allow for explanation and some not.  I just don't want to shift my concentration from a good oral board mindset,  to caveat during an interview.  If it became necessary, would the end of an oral board be the appropriate time?  Or is there a chance later on in the interviewing process?


My employer is not in touch with the day to day reality and continually brings up a few negative instances and holds them over my head.  As far as I know, there is not any written record of reprimand and I assume I would have had to sign such paperwork for it to be valid.  The only time I have known they felt positive or negative about my performance is when "I" ask for a wage review.  "I" am the only one who has ever initiated a review and they always have negative overtones.  I am not without fault, but have also grown and matured throughout.  My co-workers are of the same opinion and feel the same negativity from the office.  


I see it as a game to keep us off balance during any performance and wage reviews, and after 11 years it is complete weaksauce.  More importantly, it worries me that they will continue their manipulations in a negative way.

Don't overthink this matter.  Unless they have documented criminal activity (thefts, assaults, etc), habitual tardiness, insubordiination or any other allegations that might impune your character then you should just relax and be completely honest on any LE application, interview, etc that you might be involved in.  The background investigator and/or review board will give you the chance to clear up any issues that this brings up and as long as your responses are truthful and speak to positive aspects of your character then you will be fine.
