I love the Marines.

My aircraft carrier was one huge taxi for the Marines. Oh, ... we carried other things, like A-4 Skyhawks, F-8 Crusaders, helos and airdales, but the Marines loved our accommodations. Plus they babysat all of our nukes.

They were kinda picky, too, about getting too close to 'their' bombs. I had a young Marine put a Colt .45 between my eyes when I wandered too close to their nukes. I was authorized to be in the area but geez, seems like a mere 12" lean in the wrong direction upset the lad.

I didn't argue with him.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!!!

Just came back from a storied dive bar in Oceanside that's been around since WW2, I think.  A merry crowd of Marines  - vets of the Vietnam War up to the present - and friends.  There were free hot dogs and chili.  Someone baked a cake.  The juke box blared out a mix of hip hop, classic rock, heavy metal, c&w - something for everyone - The Marine Corps Hymn.  Everyone danced and sang, played pool and darts. 

I played pool with a Vietnam War vet and later texted my friend in Provo who served in the Corps in Afghanistan and Iraq and recently moved to Utah.  Ben was alone at home, getting drunk, lonesome as can be.  I sure do wish I could have been Ben's designated driver tonight!   I would have made sure we tore up the town!

If you know a Marine who might have celebrated this special weekend alone for one reason or another ...take him or her to breakfast!
