In this state, local takes longer to retire from (30 years vs 20) also if you were in the military your time spent active duty would not apply towards your retirement. I work local law enforcement and enjoy it immensely however I never served in the military (thank you for your service). If I had, I may have given more thought to the feds (also if I was younger and met the age guidelines). That way I would be able to retire at an earlier age. Speaking to some of the LEOs that work at the local base, I have mixed feelings with what they have to deal with per SOP versus what we have to deal with. I like the fact that we have a bit more freedom than they do but then again they get paid more than we do. It's all in what you are looking for I guess.

You can't cure stupid.

Honestly most of your local law enforcement would probably agree that federal agents are a dime a dozen. Some are outstanding while others came straight out of college and the only experience they have in police work is from a text book (which will never ever ever ever give you the ability to aquire the appropriate level of experience). Nothing can compare to on the job, hands on experience. Period. I want to work for the state as well possibly our state police which would be SBI or ALE but I am definitely spending the next few years on a local level until I get into investigations and have been there for some time. I want the real experience, not something I read in a book or imagined. A lot of our SBI agents lack the actual practical experience. They are purely college graduates. So, I think this gives them a disadvantage when they are called upon to assist actual law enforcement officers in a large investigation. I am not discrediting the agency or state or federal agents, however I like to see those who have a combination of actual law enforcement experience, with a degree. This would make them an exceptional candidate to lead a state investigation. Period.
