I have some wonderful news.. I finally did it! I finally got hired on as a CO! After all the doubt, fear, and tears I finally get to do what I want to do with my life instead of being a loser that lives off hard working people. It's still in the conditional offer stage, but I only have to do my UA test and I'm good to go. I know I'll pass that, the only thing that I've ever taken that's a controlled substance is perscribed to me though my doc. I'm glad I could wait till I got home to do a happy dance and jump up and down like a lunatic... lol

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I got the phone call that said, "CONGRATULATIONS..... YOU GOT THE JOB."  I did the happy dance on the road all the way home and all the way to the office the next day when I gave my then current employer my two weeks notice.  CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD LUCK in your career.

Tomorrow is when I start. I've never been this nervous. What if I screw up and someone gets hurt or dies because of it?

Don't start second-guessing yourself! Its just the first day jitters. You'll get plenty of training. Listen to what they tell you, learn the job and you'll do fine. If something's not clear, ask questions.

Best wishes.

Positive thoughts. It takes awhile before things start clicking and they will in due time.

Wouldn't mind if they started to click now. I'd say the hardest part about it is dealing with the inmates. I've been getting a lot of whistles and pet names.. and of course they wait till my back is turned to do it so I can't say for sure which ones are doing it.

All they are doing is trying to get under your skin and get you to say or do things that will get you in trouble. They have nothing better to do and plenty of time to do it. Being new, they'll do different things to try and find out all they can about you. Remember to keep your personal life at home and don't talk about work issues in front of inmates.

At the end of the shift, you get to go home, they don't. Remember that!

First off I want to congratulate you!!  How exciting!  I am assuming that CO means correctional officer and I apologize if I am way off base...

Now I would like to say that this quote is one of the many reasons that I truly respect anyone who chooses to enter the field of CO.  A very good friend of mine is in corrections and some of the stories he tells...  Well, let's just say that being a CO is not a job that just any average joe could do and do well.  Keep your chin up and let it roll off.  The comments will never stop but, eventually, you may stop "hearing" them as one may stop hearing a train that passes by their home every night.

I look forward to your updates!!

Yep it does stand for correctional officer. It's a only for now job, right now I can't go into police or sherrif right now (I'm heavily pregnant). I  have notice a decrease in comments and whistles because I've just been blowing it off and not really reacting (except my ears get really red lol)... At first it got worse but one of my co-workers that my LT. puts me with more often than not kept saying ignore it over and over under his breath. And when he knew I was going to loose my temper (not exactly hard sometimes) he pinched my elbow and started to talk to me so I could block it out easier. :)

I've seen some pretty strange and way wacky things since I started.. There was one guy that actually started dressing like a woman (heels, dress, makeup the works), even insisted on the other officers and I call him Reba lol... Wow, never seen one of those before now, and there's another guy that's so messed up in the head that he needs to go to one of those prisons that deal only with the criminally insane. According to him he has five people inside his head, and I believe that.. His mood changes so much from day to day that I don't know which one to expect! I love my job, but there are times if I wonder if I would have been better off with my old job that I was miserable at. :/

That and I've gotten across to them that I'm not there to be friends, and I'm not there to be their mother either.. Do something that's against the rules I will turn you in. lol
