Well as most know I had spinal surgery last year and the consensus was retirement then. Titanium rods and screws holding me together shades of the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz.. I wanted to prove them wrong. I rehabbed like heck.  Was up and stair climbing the next day. Walking a mile a week later. I was cleared for work and went back in April.

All went well until late July.  I started getting severe migraines lasting days. Scans and MRIs were done and it was determined spinal  fluid had leaked into the cranial cavity. They will be a fact of life from now on. The medications to help alleviate the severity of them interfere with my ability to  perform the job to the best of my ability.

Its time for someone younger, stronger and more fit. 12/31/12 is my last day in uniform.

THE SARGE  has most graciously stated I am welcome to stay and I plan to. You are all my friends. In this line of work friends are hard to come by.  I thank all of you for that friendship. It lifts my heart to see that there are brave officers out there who  understand the job, the public. It also  is a joy to see all those not in law enforcement support us the way I have seen here on PL. To all here on PL-WELL DONE.

Congrats on the Retirement! I'm sure it was a hard decision to make. I wish you all of the best as you enjoy freedom from the stresses of the Job!!

And of course you can stay here. Why would you leave? We definately need your input, insight and humor here in PL Land!!

From one retiree to another (coming soon anyway), Congratulations on the retirement.  I had to take mine a little earlier than expected or than I wanted as well.  But you are right, you have served your community and agency well and long enough, let the young guns take it from here.  Enjoy your retirement as best you can and we would greatly appreciate it if you hung around here on PL.

Sergeant 405 - I KNOW you must have rehabbed even harder than mere "heck" to achieve THAT particular goal. As for the rest, we all know what the Tin Man had beating in his chest all along.  Big heart.  Maybe the most important requirement of the job.

Something the 'younger, stronger and more fit' learn from vets like you - who endure and prevail.

Congratulations on your decision.

I am sorry that you have to give up one great thing in your life, it really is a game changer Al. Take the next couple of months to adjust to not doing the job. Good luck my friend, I am here if you need some support.

I too hate to hear that you are pulling the pin but only because I know how much you love the job. I agree with Bill, take a couple of months and just relax and do whatever. Then find something to keep you busy. You have wayyyyyy to much knowledge to share. Talk to your academy people, maybe they could use you ! I'm glad you are staying with us. If nothing else, shepard our newbies !!!

I hope your not done with LE when you retire because you still have so much more to give.  Your wisdom and experience are very valueable. Something only years on the job can give you.

Hey Sgt.

I know it's not the way you wanted to go, but congrats on retirement. You have a lot to offer to the men and women in LE and lord knows that you do it on PL. I wish you well my friend in what ever you do. Enjoy some time off, get well and I know you will find a way to pass your knowledge along to others.

Congratulations Sarge! Perhaps you can continue to impart your knowledge and experience in a classroom besides the PL classroom? Best of luck in whatever your decision is and glad you will be hanging out here...

SGT405,      Congrats on making it to retirement and thanks for your years of service !!! Like others have already said, help train the newbies. You've already done it, now you can teach it !! Passing on your experience to others will help to smooth the way for them, and even keep them out of trouble in the future !!             Bob P.

Al, be sure to know this one thing; It wasn't me extending an invitation to you to call this your home. It is every PoliceLink cop, deputy and supporter saying the same thing.

This is your haven of rest. A place where you can pass on your legacy of experience and knowledge.

You are a person who makes this site great.

So, yeah, don't go anywhere. Or else I will find you, drag your skinny beeehind back to your screen and make your hands work the keys.

congrats on retirement sgt.  perhaps you could become a speaker at an academy and pass some of that knowledge on to young officers. i been out of the academy 2 years and i have always been grateful for the vets who gave me advice in the academy and since then. and i bet you have a ton to pass on.
