I'm 48, in good health and in decent shape (could be better). I'm prior military and worked security all my life. I was recently laid off from a well paying security manager job that I held for three years. I've allways wanted to go to the academy and become a police officer, but I fear that departments will not consider me bacause of my age. Is 48 too old to be cop?

Generally no. There are some departments where they have a cut off age ( I've seen anywhere from 36 to 44,) and others that don't. My chief was hired onto our department when he was 50. There was an officer in a department close by that got hired on at 63. It depends on the agancy. Contact whichever agency and ask.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to sign up for the academy and see what happens. Time to start training!

Good luck Ron I wasa 37 when I started now 50 geez I feel old. LOL If you are qualified I do not see a problem with you getting on where ever you want too. I trained men and women in there 50s and 60s at the MT Law Enforcement Academy. Some of them are still working and loving it. So once again good luck and God bless.

I had a guy in my academy class that was 49...you would not be the oldest person to graduate a Police Academy. Good luck!

Take a deep breath and relax. I've seen guys in their 50's in the police academy. I have a friend that is 75 and works as a Lt. Detective.

Great news! I feel I have a lot to offer a department and whatever community I serve. The Academy starts in January, so tomorrow starts "Training Day." LOL Physical training day, that is. Thanks again to everybody and I'm going to soak up all the great information this site has to offer and keep everyone posted on my progress.

I have seen thousands of applicants over my years. There were quite a few ranging in age from 45 to 50 that were hired because they had spotless records and were in great physical shape.  So I imagine its up to you.
