I was recently hired by a police department in South Carolina. I was wondering if anyone has attended the Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC. If anyone could give me some info on academy life, advice, etc.; that would be great.

Bed linens are issued, but bring your own for comfort. You can 't leave the campus during the week, so make sure you have enough of everything you may need (snacks, toiletries, smokes etc.) The instructors are all great and will help you any way they can as long as you are making the effort. I just recently went through the Basic Jail class, so that was only three weeks and we didn't do firearms or driving. There is wifi on the site and tvs in the common areas. There is a weight room also.

Thank you! Appreciate the input. Are you allowed to stay at the academy during the weekends, or does it shut down completely?

I am curious why academy personnel did not cover this information?

It has been awhile since I was there and things apparently have changed like not being able to leave campus during the week, but I remember being there like yesterday because it was a very positive experience especially because of the quality of the instruction and the instructors.  Of the various academies or courses I've taken, I would rank my experience there as the best.

My best advice would be to highlight and take good notes during class, and then get involved in a study group especially before exams, so you can review what you have learned, get others ideas and takes on what was taught, and maybe pick-up on something you missed in class.  More importantly, make friends and network with classmates from other departments as you never know when you may need their assistance in the future especially if you become a detective/investigator.

Having the proper Attitude and Mental Preparation combined with proper Training gives you the tools needed to Think, Act, and Be Safe...

Academy personnel have not covered this information because I have yet to start at the academy. November 1 is the start date for my academy class.

And guys thank you for the great info so far. Was the academy more focused on academics or PT? Or a balance of both?
