Hope I'm in the right forum! Ok so my friend knows I'm in school studying Criminal Justice, so she surprised me by buying me a bunch of Police 'gear' (t-shirts/hoodies) that have the word 'POLICE' written on the front from Amazon. Isn't it illegal to wear them in public? I didn't say anything to her about it, but I'd rather ask all of you before I wear one and end up in trouble! Thanks in advance for your replies!

Slow down. Relax and take a deep breath. Go ahead and wear them. To add some class I would purchase a police ball cap.

:) Well I don't want people or the Police thinking I'm trying to impersonate an officer and give me a ticket or something :) I honestly thought it was illegal o.O Thanks so much!

Do you really want to attract the wrong crowd (criminals, felons, anti-law enforcement) in public by wearing clothing (especially hoodies) that says "Police?" I wouldn't......

On a side note, what if you were wearing these "police gears" in public while witnessing a crime in progress or citizen having a heart attack or other medical issues and people looked up to you for assistance? Then what?

When I first started this gig several years ago friends and family bought me shirts, jackets and hoodies with our Dept name. well after arresting several persons and doing this job for a while I no longer wear these unless I am on duty or going to a school and then that is the only time I wear them.

I am a NYPD collector and much of my summer and fall attire are NYPD tee shirts and hoodies. Seldom does anyone axe if I am or was a member of the department. I have never experienced anyone making  a negartive comment. Some people even axe where they can purchase a tee shirt.

Go ahead. Wear them if you like. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I see people wearing this type of clothes all the time.

On a related - side note...I was at the local tire shop buying new tires for my son's car. I live about 50 miles from where I work so it's not common knowledge that I'm a LEO. I get into a conversation with another customer and he asks me what I do. I tell him I'm a police officer and he gets this big grin on his face and says, 'I knew you were a cop." I ask him how he knew that and he says I just have " the look" of one. I wasn't wearing anything that said "police" on it. In fact, I had on a ratty pair of shorts and a tee shirt. So, the moral here is you can wear just about anything, but if you don't have "the look" (whatever that is), it is just clothes.

I know how you feel BigNTS.  I may not be an officer but everytime I told people that I wanted to become a cop, everyone respoded the same by saying "Figures, you look like one anyways".

I sometimes buy shirts when I'm at PD stations. Usually the money goes to benevolence or memorial funds. But I don't usually wear them in public. I'm not a cop.

I don't know of anything like that being illegal, at least in my area it's not. For your safety I would not wear those too much because if you encounter someone who has it out for cops, they won't ask if you are really a cop before they hurt you or attempt to hurt you. I think as long as you don't tell people you are cop then you won't be impersonating one and if you have training and can help someone medically or be a good witness then you are doing nothing more than being a good citizen.

I think it is no different than peole that wear FDNY Hats or FD shirts and are not fire fighters. It may make a real FF be disgusted that someone is wearing FF Gear and not trainined, but it's not illegal.

Thanks everyone! Well she bought them for me because I'm in school, they only say 'POLICE', no specific dept or anything so they don't look like 'cop clothes' as people say. I doubt I will make a habit of wearing them a lot, maybe just to class or something for the exact reason that IowaNiners Fan posted and I'm not trying to disrespect any LEO by doing so. I'm not a cop, yet, although I'm working my butt off to get that far. As far as the 'look', I have had people comment that I always look 'serious' etc which is why they say I look like a cop, kinda makes me giggle how people always assume every LEO is evil or something. But anyways, thanks again everyone!

Shetland that's probably because they figure anyone our age couldn't possibly be a LEO.
