As someone who wants to go into Law Enforcement I find it irratating when I heard about officers I know getting into trouble. Recently one was caught having an affair the rumors I've heard differ between if he was caught on duty or working off duty but still he knew better he was married. Another officer I know was recently charged with assaulting his wife. The sad part is knowing these two guys I'm not suprised but I was hoping although I thought they were both a bit odd that with them being Police Officers they would hold themselves to a higer standard than to be doing things like this. So I guess my question is how can someone who is suppose to represent The Good Guy end up being the Bad Guy like this? I understand that cops are human too but I guess since I admire all they do for me and the general public I feel a bit betrayed when I hear stories like this, It's even worse considering I knew them personally.

We are held to a higher standard. Cops are human and make mistakes. One officer was caught cheating on his wife which is not a criminal offense and if he hadn't been a cop it would not be an issue. The key word on the second officer he was charged with assault however, has not or was not convicted. If you are going to judge I certainly hope your personal life is lilly white. If you do not have facts then both of these circumstances may be rumors.

 Bump Dennis.

I agree completly. One of the worst things in our profession is the armchair quarterbacking that goes on. IF you were not there you don't know. If you are not one of the involved parties in the alegation, you don't know. Many, many LOEs have lost their jobs over the appearance of misconduct. BY lost their jobs, I am also including their being "forced" out of their job by judgemental supervisors, Sergeants etc... who make the working conditions intolerable, yet perfectly legal.

Police Officers are pulled from the same Gene pool and the rest of America. great efforts are put forth in many departments to try and ensure they are hiring people with a good moral compass. Some departments, not so much. Every profession is going to have it's bad apples. We can only hope they are weeded out, in an honest manner after being given the same opportunity to defend themselves and not be unfairly blackballed.

Assults can take many forms.   Had a friend who grabbed his wife's arm when she was getting ready to hit him and she cried assult.   When the police came she got talked out of it   He was a LEO from another state so things worked out ok.    As has been stated people cheat on their spouses no matter who they are.

As Uncle D said, but that is the human factor. All we can do as officers and people is take the mistakes of others to heart, learn from it and not get roped into those situations, but free will is what it is and I agree its a a bad deal. I just worry abourt keeping my own house clean...

A huge bump to my friend Uncle Dennis. Truer words were never spoken. LEOs in general are the finest group of men and women you could ever find and/or associate with. Yes we do have our faults and unfortunately adultery is not that uncommon. The divorce rate among Officers is exceptionally high. They have so many things thrown at them that they cannot or will not tell their spouse and they have women who will literally throw themselves at them. Some like myself were in a bad marriage when they became a LEO and yes I was one of those that was unfaithful. I did finally get a divorce even though my ex did not want one but I could not longer remain in a totally loveless marriage. This would have happened even if I was not a LEO as the marriage was over long before that happened. I then found a great woman and have never even thought of being unfaithful to her. Testosterone runs very high among LEOs but understand that the majority are excellent husbands and fathers even in a very difficult job.

I'll put it this way.  Most states, if not all, have laws against adultry, however if they were vigorously enforced there would be few judges left to hear the cases, few attorneys to try or defend the cases, few politicians to change the law.

Another problem is some agencies are lowering their hiring standards in the interest of being 'politically correct' and end up hiring people who shouldn't be in LE.

I do agree that 99% of the cops I know are completely awesome, trustworthy, and do awesome jobs. However like I said I wasn't suprised that these two got in trouble, there are a few cops I know that I can't believe ever became cops and wouldn't trust with a potato gun. Then there are some I would love to run for President because they are so honest and trustworthy and all around good guys. I used the two incidents that happend to people I know to highlight an issue I know occurs in the LE community but was not actually taking shots at these two indivduals because regardless of their personal lives these two were fantastic cops on the job.

I didn’t mean to offend anyone with this topic. My intent was to gather perspectives from others on this issue which does affect people of all walks of life, but as everyone has said police officers are held to a higher standard. I’ve taken ethic classes before which mentions the slippery slope and the issue is a big gray area that I felt a discussion about that gray area would be beneficial.

Also from what I've learned about this site was that someone who wanted to learn more about LE could ask questions and get help from others to gain a well rounded point of view about LE. That means the good, the bad and the ugly sides of LE.

RavenLH,

The good, bad and ugly of it all is that LEOs look like everyone else out of uniform... human.  With being human come faults and weaknesses.

Remember that sometimes the face presented to the world is not an accurate one.  We can find the bad apples in every profession, right?  Like treehugger said, "THESE THINGS HAPPEN EVERYDAY ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY IN EVERY WALK OF LIFE AND IN EVERY PROFESSION."
