Man, this is a topic that is Highly debated.

So I'll just break it down a little so you can choose your path

Veterans preference points are as high as 20 in some areas. That means with a score of 71 on your test, you beat a non vet with a 90.

4 Years of college will earn you a much better career in the Military, should you choose to pursuit one.

4 years of college costs ALOT.

Joining the Military will earn you 3 Years of that College.

You know what is a really good deal? Join the Military, earn your GI Bill, knock out a year of college while you are in for 100% tuition assistance, then get out, finish your last 3 years on the GI bill, then....Join a Police Dept with a 4 Year degree, AND Vet pref points :-)

This is a subject which has come up many times on this link.My friend Scjohnk has nailed it.Exactly what I and many law enfoecement officers have done. You indeed will receive extra points not only on your preliminary exams for this job but also for promotional exams for being a vet and for your college hours. On my job,as in a number of other major cities, you will also rteceive higher pay for the different college degrees you attain.

Oh, and the Army will be more than happy to test you and certify you in Spanish. Some Departments give up to an extra 10% for being Bilingual.

For practical experience the military is the way to go in so far as travelling and experiencing the world. As was said one option I think is to enlist and get some military experience and while you are serving you can attend college and finish at a JUCO or university close to the post where you are stationed.

Many posts have educational outreach facilities and with an educational counselor you can get 2 years knocked out . With today's optempo your time will likely be limited with training and deployments, but it can still be done. The military experience will make you a more disciplined college student and then you can finish in the Reserve and get a retirement.

Bilingual is a good idea nowadays and many agencies do offer at least an extra stipends for your fluency in a language. The job market is tight out here and when you can get an extra leg up for military service or veterans status, one should check military service qualifications and take advantage of what you could earn.

I am just going to say this....from my experience, are far more military vets that apply for police jobs than college graduates. I won't say which is better, but a department functions much better with diversity among the ranks.
