Hello Policelink world! I wanted to get your opinions on this, I would rather have "current" LEO's opinions but I guess anyone can answer! I got the information on this off of http://www.policeone.com/legal/articles/5882513-ACLU-DC-protects-citizen-journalists-from-police/, if you want to check it out.

Basically, we have all seen the videos on youtube and such of the public videoing LEOs in action wether it be a positive video or negative. So, my question is, do you or would you mind if people were videoing you on let's say a traffic stop or a DV call? Why/why not? Do you have any example or has this ever happened to you?

Bump Scjohnk.

I have been on scenes where citizens have video taped.  On more than one occassion I have approached the individual and asked for a copy.  One in point was a fatal house fire.  A citizen video taped the scene before anyone arrived (this was a rural area and the neighbor heard the call on her scanner) the video was very good for learning the progression of the fire.  I asked for, and received a copy.  This neighbor was unknowingly providing good evidence of the cause of the fire.

If you see someone video taping your activity don't be afraid to ask, yes I said ASK for a copy.  Most of the time they use their smart phone and can email it right from the phone.

Quite frankly you can rest assured that 90% + of the time that officers are video taped is simply to try to get them in trouble, looking for a negative aspect of any move they make.Generally they appear at fires and/or fatal vehicular collisions and get in the way of paramedics, firemen and officers. Not often is it innocent and they NEVER render aide.In essence they are simply vultures filming death. My crew and I were constantly filmed, during riots in my city, for eight consecutive years ,usually by the same individuals who were throwing rocks, bottles, bricks, chunks of concrete, bags of urine and molotovs,at us.They relished in seeing officers suffer. My experience in going through this in twenty seven years of Police Work left me quite bitter in regard to people filming Police work which the news media and other civilians have no concept of.Said films are quite frequently doctored to display officers at fault. It is not difficult to do.

As long as they don't get in the way or make it worse, then they can video tape all they want.  This also includes if and suspect/victim says they don't want to be video taped I might tell the videographers to back off or they are gonna make things worse (politely of course).

Also, they can only video tape me if they get my good side

I don't think you can stop a person from video taping. I am fine as long as they don't get in my space.

Good stuff, I was just curious because I've seen so many videos on youtube and such of civilians filming officers (usually to get the officer in trouble.) Thanks for your feedback!

Since you are a street cop you should be familiar with citizens videotaping us. How do you handle it?

I wish I was a street cop! I wasn't sure where you got that info from at first so I went and looked through my profile and notice that it say's civilian/other so I'm guessing that's where. I wasn't sure what to put there when I was doing my profile so I need to change that!
