Hey guys! My name is Derek, I'm 26 and I live in Phoenix, Az. I'm new to this site, just joined this week! I am currently working 2 jobs, one is a part time job as a youth pastor at a church and the other is full time at a garage door company where I do repair work and installs. Any who, I have applied to 2 local police departments here as a recruit and sure am hoping that one of them will work out! I've always been interested in law enforcement and have tried my hands at just about everything you could think of, and my wife keeps telling me I should stop talking about it and do it so I am!

I've got my first ride-a-long coming up this Saturday with Officer Washburn with the Surprise P.D, and I couldn't be more excited. I'm really looking forward to getting to know some of the LEO's on this site and gleaning from others wisdom!

enjoy the ride along. Send a thank you note (not email) to his supervisor thanking him and the officer your rode with. Offer to buy dinner for the officer while on patrol.

UncleD's advice is right on the money, Also, listen and learn from the officer. Ask him questions after a call, and listen carefully to his answers, especially about why he did something the way he did.

Thanks for the idea Uncledennis, I will definately do that, although we will be out for the 6am-4pm shift, so I'll buy him lunch! Thanks for the warm greetings ladies and gents!

Good advice indeed! I usually ask the officer I'm riding with if it's ok that I buy him/her dinner. Some officers don't want others to pay for them and some appreciate the token of appreciation.

Welcome from MN I would also agree with Uncledennis says chances are the officer wont allow you to buy him dinner, but its the thought that counts. If you do not get in, try to get on as a reserve officer, or volunteer with the local ambulance service or fire dept. Its all emergency experience that will help you get into law enforcement.  Good Luck and have fun.

Welcome to PL.

Best of luck in your pursuit and look into the next available Citizen's Academy's, Volunteer Programs or even an Explorer position if age permits with the agency of interest and or even look at the Reserve Division if they have one and see if you can get name a facial recognition with your agency of interest and that should help when you go through the process. It certainly can't hurt and you wil be learning something the entire time you are doing it. Keep us posted on your progress...

The physical agility / written test is August 4th. I've been training like crazy but am still a little below the minimum requirements on pushups, gotta keep at it!

Thats awesome 1baggdHD! You go for it man, you'll get it for sure. I have my application in at 2 other departments so I should have a PT coming up with them soon, I know I'll pass it the next time around. I'm scanning the job market pretty constantly to check for any new openings so I know I will get there eventually!

Half a sit up?  At 23 that's one less Big Mac and fries that day.  Just kiddin', but you can turn that around!

Hey guys, time for an update! I have applied at 2 more agencies: Gilbert and Wickenburg. Unfortunately, Wickenburgs test date falls next week which is the same time that I have my 4 day backpacking trip to Havasupai (which I've already shoveled out bookoos of money into) so I won't be getting hired on with Wickenburg. Gilberts testing date isn't for another month so we will see!
