Jelousy, Hypocracy, and Gossip among LEO's

I am amazed that at every agency I come across the officers are the first to proclaim their "brotherhood". We as police officers pride ourselfs on how we "back each other up" and whatnot... but I am also amazed that every officer I come across always has something negative about another officer. Anyone else notice this??? People will say.." Oh, he's a screw up" or "She's a Lesbo" "She's a whore" etc. etc. But meanwhile we smile to that persons face while we stab a knife in their backs?? Wheres the brotherhood then? Where's the trust? I thought we were a family.

I have no run across one officer who doesn't participate in the gossip, jelousy and envy. Everyone I talk to bad mouths other officers, ironically when they are not around to defend themselves. Don't get me wrong.. I am not perfect and I do not like everyone I work with.. but when I have a problem with another officer.. I am not one of those officers who runs and tells the Sgt. or the LT. or the CAPT. I will go to that officer PERSONALLY, not through a 3rd party, and tell them exactly what I am thinking.. so there is no mistake about it, and I won't smile to their face while stabbing them in the back.

I say this b/c while on a traffic stop one night I pulled my gun for officer safety reasons... which I felt I needed to do. My "backup" was lame excuse for an officer and in my opinion, (which she knows) has no business being in law enforcement. She had a problem with me pulling my gun... even though 99% of the department felt it was justified. This poor excuse for an officer goes and tells the Sgt. that I used exessive force and that it was not needed. Either way.... couldn't she come to me and tell me she had a problem with the way I handled it... even though it was justified.

Doesn't sound like either of you pussies would make a pimple on a real policemans ass. Shes gives new meaning to the term RAT...you sound like you should be selling insurance or used cars.

Damn, my department was pretty good! If we had a bitch with each other we said it right up front and worked it out, or left it with the proper feelings known. Everyone always knew where we stood and of course would bang up a unit to get to each other to back each other up. Except for one, she was seen twice going the opposite way when an officer needs help call went out. She was publicly called on it and everyone knew who caught her and what she did.

FYI One of the times she was caught was the time I busted my hand up beating the hell out of an old guy that simply could not feel pain and had a hard enough head that I just could not knock him out! One hand on my gun where both his hands were and the other one beating his head to a bloody pulp. He took over 30 stitches and my hand was badly broken. If she has responded it may well have been completely avoided.

mazinc2000, here's my theory (and I stand ready to be corrected/instructed by any LEO here)...

Cops are action-oriented people, but a lot of cop-work is pretty boring. "Hours of boredom punctuated by minutes of sheer terror", as they say. (And then it is time to write the reports!)

Sometimes I think the gossip is "pot-stirring", pure and simple. There's nothing going on and it lends a little interest to life.

What do you think, folks? Is this true? Or what else do you think might be going on?

Just think of how many different personalities there are among the ranks in any department. There are bound to be clashes. It is human nature to complain about co-workers. The Brotherhood comes in during times of trouble. The officer doesn't put a face to a call for help. When there is a call for help, they just instintively go. The brotherhood also comes in when an issue arises. Cops are going to stick together whether they like each other or not. It's just like any family. I know there are people in my family that I am not fond of. Same in the police family. This is my perception after 35 years of having many friends in the "business".

Lol Odin I think CK meant (maybe she did) Succinctly which means “with concise and precise brevity; to the point.” Succinct which means the same thing.... ;)

Well, if you are going to start taking words apart to find something offensive, remind me not to use the word "firetruck" in any posts to you!

NYPDLt., the answer is "243".

Odin, that must be the problem-- that they CAN'T see your tail wagging.

Ummmm... that IS your tail, right?

Maybe I'd better speak to Mrs. O...

Well, I tried to find you one, but couldn't.

I used to have the address for a free source of smilies and other icons, but I lost it when my computer crashed.

Too bad, because I KNOW I could have found you something suitable!

Hey Listen ODIN.. I also said I go to that persons face and tell them what I say... I don't run to a Sgt. or Lt. Trust me... when I heard she was talking S*** I told her off! Does that make sence to you?
