At 16 years of age, just focus on staying out of trouble, getting the best grades that you can and receiving your high school diploma.  Look into your local police department or sheriff's department explorer or cadet programs which will give you valuable training and working experience.  Consider joining the military and getting some life experience.  Choose wisely the type of people you associate with.  Your freinds and associates will either lift you to new heights or drag you down.  The latter will prevent you from ever realizing your goal.  Be good and stay good.

Congratulations on knowing what you want to do at this stage in your life!  Many your age still are trying to figure out what they want for lunch and aren't to worried about what's going to happen next year. . . .much less 5 years down the road.

First thing. . . .KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN!  Do NOT allow your peers to lead you down the feel good path that leads to invitations to explain yourself to the judge.

Second. . . .work on the math.  There are many things in law enforcement where math plays a role.  Especially if you decide to get into a specialized area of law enforcement, such as crash reconstruction requires some understanding of physics and the ability to work through the formulas given to you.

Third. . . . .ENGLISH!  Report writing is probably the biggest thing you will ever do in law enforcement and if your english is poor. . . .you WILL embarrass not only yourself, but also your department (if hired).  When you figure that your reports are going to be read by your supervisor, the prosecutor, a judge, the media and who knows who else (i.e. FOIA requests). . . .the last thing you want to do is give the impression you are a imbecile  that should probably be back on the farm.

Lastly. . . .but not least, personal physical fitness!  At 16 years of age, you may still have some growing to do. . . .or not.  As an officer, you will find that while size matters in many things. . . .Murphy's Law says that when you are by yourself and need to arrest someone that really doesn't want to go along with that plan. . . .they will be larger and maybe stronger than you but you still have to do your job!  Running and SOME weights (unless you really want to look like the Hulk) will get you so you can run for distance AND do repetitive actions with stamina that most people won't have.  THAT is where you will excel in a fight!  Also, if you're not used to fighting. . . .maybe take some boxing or martial arts classes to get used to hitting AND being hit.  This way you will know that except for a few areas of the body. . . .you WILL be able to fight through anything that is "thrown" at you.

There are others, but I'll stop here for now.  Good luck in your endeavors,

Steve

Do the best you can in school. If there is an explorer program join that. You might also volunteer for community service to allow you to see and focus on the problems in your areas and understand how people from ALL ages, economy, cultures, etc act and feel about things in this world. Stay the course and always tell the truth and try and do what is right. Do not worry about "being cool" or "running with the crowd" so you will be popular. Just be honest and try and do what's right and you will be and do just fine.
