-Active Military (Soon to be honorably discharged), USN Master at Arms (military police)

-Native Texan :-)

I very much want to be a cop in Austin but imagine it is super comptitive especially considering my age. Would love to hear from anyone in the know.

Thanks.

Your first post should be in "Introductions" to tell us about yourself. Please read the TOU  (Terms of Use), it's on the bottom of each page and take it from there.  Regards.

What I am looking for is specific to Austin so I went straight to the jugular but I'll bow to decorum headbrer. :)

I am not a LEO, but ex-military and a member here since 2008. All I am saying is what any longtime member would have said. If you have any questions there are forums you can go to to "ask a cop" directly.  If you don't mind I'm known as "Doc" here, I would appreciate your using that.

You should really not take yourself that serious, the kid just asked a question, he's learning, stop being so hard right off the bat.

I'm not from Texas but I'd say you've got a pretty good resume. APD mimimun requirements state you cannot have turned 46 before the start of the academy. So you're good to go there.

If Law Enforcement is what you want to do, then apply. They are taking apps now. Don't let anybody talk you in, or talk you out. It's got to be a decision that you make. You've got to commit 100% to this profession.

Good Luck.

I believe Austin is hiring now, so go for it, I would say your resume looks good and Austin does hire older individuals.

First take a deep breath and relax (I notice this posted twice). Keep in mind other applicants will have and also exceed the qualifications you have. Maybe it is just me however, I would contact Austin P.D. directly and inquire.

Is it just me..or are more and more people becoming reluctant to contact department recruiters and ask these types of questions? I mean...thats what they are there for!!!! Chief, you have to say "call and axe" at least once a day.

Bump!! He needs a little stamp, "Call and Ask".

You wouldn't go in there for a million bucks...A Cop does it for less...A Reserve does it for free....

I'm guessing that you're stuck in the same place most people are with the fact that you might get some time on the computer since there is a lot of mandatory online training in the Military. I'm also guessing that your days start rather early and usually end sometime after 4PM. However you do get some time later in the day to make phone calls, but only get 30 minutes or so a day and that time is best spent talking to your family. Therefore you don't have time to really call and talk to a recruiter, especially because those 30 minutes fall at an hour way past 3PM. So if you'll give me a little time I will try to give you as much information as I can.

As far as age you can't be older than 45 if you turn 46 before the first day of the Academy your SOL
