Hey  have a shooting question for the Le guys,

I am still waiting for an invite to the Law enforcement academy and I was wondering,I shoot a pistol right handed but I use my left eye to target. I have tried the right but I am way off. How will this effect me using a long gun?  And by the way I have not been out in the back yard learning bad habits I have been target shooting with  hand guns for a long time.

Unless you're used to shooting long guns with the "weak eye", it may pose a problem during aiming. Have you fried a long gun that way before?

I am right handed and left eye dominant. I have been shooting hand guns that way for over 25 years in Law Enforcement with no problems.
You just ajust the gun over a little bit no big deal. You will run into instructors who will want to "fix you" because they think this is a big problem. When I started out shooting my instructors they left me alone.
Do try to learn to shoot using both eyes. This will give you an advantage when shooting around cover.
Good luck and be safe.

Good answer, 401. I can fire with either hand and use the firing side eye when I shoot. I wasn't sure how this would work with a long gun, but just seemed uncomfortable.

"...fried a long gun..." ?

Member 401 beat me to the punch. Work at shooting with either eye for handguns or long guns.

AND, learn to shoot with both eyes open. No need to close one eye. Once you master this, you will have better command of your focus.

I might recommend this book: "Combat Focus Shooting: Intuitive Shooting Fundamentals", by Rob Pincus, I.C.E. Publishing. Excellent basic gun handling.

I must concur with The Sarge. I always fired with both eyes open.

I tried just focusing on an object with both eyes open wow nothing changed, all these years been closing the right eye  and focusing with the left. I have never really fired a rifle in my life but from what I understand rifles are not in the corriculum at the academy??? Every officer that I know in three different agencys carry rifles in there car.

Tallgov,

Since you say you have never fired a rifle before I would say you should try to shoot left handed. If you learn right out of the box should be easy. I agree with everyones previous comments..... shooting with both eyes open is your best bet. With the new red dot optics (M68) most departments carry it will not matter which eye you use as long as the red dot is sighted in, put it on the target and your good to go.

I am left eye dominant. I was lucky and learned I was left eye dminant as a young kid. I learned early to shoot left handed. It improved my shooting dramatically. Now, 30+ years later I still shoot left handed.

The long gun (rifle) thing is generally agency / department specific. Through the academy, you will learn to shoot a pistol and a standard shotgun. These are still the bedrock firearms used by most agencies.

Regarding rifles: You may see one or have one demonstrated in the academy but not likely you will be receiving serious training that leads to a certification and qualification of said rifle. When you get to an agency they most likely will provide their own in house 'class' to spin you up in using a rifle as it applies to them. There are a myriad of different rifle configurations, options, policies and applications so being issed a rifle is an agency thing.

In some places you purchase your own rifle with letterhead from the Chief/Sheriff, depending on the rifle's approved capabilities, ie F/A or not, shortened upper receiver, etc. And THEN, you might actually have to surrender it over to your agency at the end of your career due to not being able to possess that same rifle as a civilian.

There are some states that still believe in the Consititution and possession of these kinds of firearms are approved, civilian and/or LEO.

Although everyone said great answers I'll put my 2 cents in.

I am also left eye/right hand.  I shoot the pistol right handed but any big/long weapons (rifle, shotgun, bow&arrow) I shoot left handed.  It's funny to look at the faces of everyone that don;t know this about me and I put the rifle in my left hand.  And then the faces turn to shock when I group it all in about a half dollar size at 25 yards where everyone else was a little more spread out.

I can only see one issue with shooting pistol from one side and rifle from the other. . . . .combat sling for the rifle.  We had them and were required to use them on the range just so they knew we knew how touse it.  When we used the sling, the rifle "hung" from our weak side when it wasn't being used. . . thus, it did not interfere with the pistol.  Maybe I'm overthinking this a bit but if (for example) you shoot left side with the rifle, if slung correctly, would it not hang over the pistol if you shot pistol from the right side?
