Hey guys, I am still looking to get in to law enforcement. The department I am currently most likely to join allows deputies to buy and use their own side arms...

I love my M&P40c, great little pistol. However the barrel is too short for their standards, so I am looking at the M&P40 or M&P40 long slide. difference is the M&P40 has a 4.25 inch barrel and the long slide has a 5 inch barrel.

What would you guys recommend?

You are getting way ahead of yourself. Secure the position and then axe.

Agree, Just wait. If they issue you a gun. Take it and dont turn back. Policy manual states guns can not be modified except for the light on the rail. Pretty much dont break it because its on them not you

Bump UncleD. I would recommend focusing all your time and attention on securing a job. That right there is hard enough. You can discuss duty weapons once you are hired.

Though getting the job is the first priority, I would say go for the full size (but not the long slide) M&P and you don't want a conpensated one, try firing yours at night to see why.  I believe gudercop carry a fullsize M&P 40

Friends M&P was issued but they had to turn in their Glocks. S&W gave them to the big department  for free so S&W could use them as advertising.  Some shot better with the M&P.  My friend has around 2500 rounds through his and it has broken multiple times while shooting.  He is not the only one.  One officers broke during the weapon introduction class and had to be sent back to S&W.  They work near the coast and the salt air is causing some of them to start to have surface rust that they never had with the Glocks.  I think the M&P guts are the same as the Sigma.  We had an officer bang his Sigma into a car door on a very cold night and the plastic handle of the Sigma just broke and the magazine fell out.  We went to Glocks after that.
