Would getting a position as a CSO with a department look better than getting an internship with a department? I am considering on doing both, but I was just curiouse.

Depends.

If you are defining a CSO as a Community Service Officer who deploys with a shift of officers/deputies to help with investigations, gather evidence, take photos, direct traffic, handle minor traffic accidents, etc., then CSO would be a good choice.

An intern is nothing more than a footnote to building a resume.

Is there a rule against doing both?

Rypete has a point. However, if you were going to choose between the two, I'd say CSO is your best bet. Although not quite the same, the standards for getting hired as a CSO are going to be much more difficult than as an Intern. If you leave a good impression with the department as a CSO, you'll have a good chance of getting hired.

I know that many agencies actually ask their CSO's if they want to become cops, and they'll get a hiring preference.

From what I understand interns usually don't get paid.. CSO does.
