Hello,

I would like to intraduce myself. I am currently a Security Forces SNCO in the U.S. Air Force. I recently applied to become a State Highway Patrol Trooper. I have passed the written, oral and physical tests, now it is on to the polygraph, mental and health screenings. I am very excited about the possability of a new policing career. It is a little strange to be looking at leaving the military after 22 years of service.

One thing I would say is the hiring process for so far has been very nerve racking. Not knowing where you stand and how you stack up or when you will be hired is taking a toll on my confidence. Being a State Trooper has been my dream since I was a teenager. I originaly joined the military as a way to work untill I turned 21. After 22 years and a few wars Im ready to go for my dream (if everything works out). I am wondering if there are any ex military that regret getting out?

Welcome to PL.  I'm retired Army after 22 years of service and I have no regrets about anything in my life, but I do miss it.  I've been a civilian cop for a combined total of 19 years and currently work for a midsize Sheriff's Office in the midwest.

The toughest part for me was and still is the transition from military discipline behavior to a lack of motivation and disciplne.  I'm a sergeant in the SO and wasenlisted initially in the MP's and retired a Major in the MP's.  With the exception of my unit there is a lack of accountability by some officers that has to be overcome, but you will do fine if you do your job, stay motivated and remember why you wanted to be a trooper that way you maintain focus and when the time comes hold your subordinates accountable for their actions just like you did in the military.  Being a supervisor is easy when you manage your own piece of the pie.

Good luck in your pursuit and keep us posted...

Welcome to Police Link, from Ohio!!

I retired after 20 Years in the US Army, and currently have 19 years Law Enforcement. Just like csiguy, I miss the Military and some of the assignments I had. My transition to Civilian life was a little easier. I did 10 years Active Duty, and finished up with 10 years in the National Guard. I had a 5 year overlap with the National Guard and being an LEO. The only thing I regret, was not taking the test sooner (waited 5 years after leaving Active Duty).

Best Wishes!! Thank You for Your Service!!!
