Hey Everyone,

I'm about to start the training academy for corrections. During my last week in training I will have to get sprayed, of course, with OC and also tazed (optional). This may be a stupid question but I have a minor heart murmur and mild asthma. Do any of you happen to know if these conditions could flare or trigger with these test's? I actually was unaware that I had these conditions until I took my physical a few days ago. The Doctor passed my physical and said the murmur was minor and to just keep an eye on it and the Ashtma wasn't anything that needed medical attention. I know the Tazer can mess with the electricial system of your heart and the OC spray basically shuts down your respiratory system but should I be concered about the OC and tazer test's? Any input is welcome. Thanks!

I have been sprayed twice and it is no picnic. Never tased. I would consult with your doctor. I am sure when you took your physical the department was aware of these medical conditions. I would speak to both your doctor and the instructor regarding your question(s). We cannot respond to a medical question such as this as no member of this site is qualified to know the answers. Best to you.

I'd consult with your physician and pose this question to him. Now that you're aware of these conditions the academy may require a doctor's release before you're allowed to participate in that course of instruction.

Personally, I don't believe exposure to either the OC or the Taser would be detrimental to your health. But then again I'm not a doctor. However, I did stay in a Holiday Inn once....

Not sure about the OC and what asthmatic symptoms exposure it may or may not produce, I wouldn't worry too much about that since you didn't know you had the problem until the medical screening and have had no prior issues.  I would be a little concerned about the recently diagnosed heart murmur and getting zapped by a taser.  We recently had training in reference to TASER INTERNATIONAL's change in point of aim from center mass to the abdomen to reduce the risk of heart failure during deployment of the device.  While such instances of heart failure were rare (by comparison to how many total reported exposures to the device), T/I recognized that such a problem could occur and changed the point of aim and it's training related to the deployment of the device to reduce the risk.  That said, I also am no doctor and am not qualified to speak directly about the specific risk factors related to you.  I would seek the advice of a Cardiologist / Heart Surgeon.

OC spray does not shut down your respiratory system. OC spray is simply an irritant that is designed to inflame the area around the eyes and sinuses. It causes immediate closing of the eyes in most subjects and causes impaired vision due to tears, runny nose, coughing, and minor pain. In most cases, the effects of pepper spray last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. I have been sprayed several times in both training scenarios and actual on the job incidents. It's not fun, but it won't hurt you.

If your asthma does not require the use of medications, you should be fine. But again, as others have stated; we are not medical professionals. Check with your doctor before hand.

 Bump.

Here is a link to an article that can help explain about OC spray. Oh the pain is only temporary. It should not cause any major problems.

Just by way of reminder: None of us are medical professionals. We cannot prescribe, recommend or direct you in an activity(s) that require the clearance of your physician.

Just follow the advise of your physician.

I have OC'd maybe 1,000+ people in training. No lingering effects.

Do your research on the basics of the Taser. It does not act as an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). I have been Tazed. It will knock you on your butt. However, you can actually fight through it if you concentrate.

Actually, the only lingering effect is my tolerance to spicy foods. They just don't seem to be as hot once you've taken a shot of OC!

At the academy I did have to take a hit of my inhaler, but I think that was more because of panic than the effects of the OC....it ain't fun.  Taser hurts. Alot.  No getting around it.  But truth be told, I'd rather take a taser hit than being oc'd any day.  A taser hit lasts for five seconds.  OC is 45 minutes of pure hell.  And if you don't decon well, you get secondary exposure once you go home to shower.  Enjoy the expeience.  Training is good.

I agree with most of the sentiments here. I would rather take a tasing over spray anyday. That being said we are not doctors. Consult yours before you go or that tasing you receive may be your last!

I apologize if you have posted a follow-up to this discussion but I cannot find it so, if you have the time and happen to see my response, would you be willing to let me know what you discovered regarding this?  If you did follow-through with the training, how did it go?

Wishing you the best!
