Greetings everyone! I've been reading posts and familiarizing myself with the rules around here for a few weeks now and I'm ready to post my introduction. I apologize in advance for the length and prose. We have a tradition in my family of documenting our life's journeys to pass on to our children, so I'm taking some excerpts from that for this post. I'll start by saying I'm a 35 year old single mother of two. I'm currently a "9 to 5er" in the corporate world and I moonlight in local stage musical productions as Director/Choreographer/Performer. But, like many of us, I've always wanted to be an LEO.

My grandfather was an LEO in the K-9 Unit for many years until he lost one of his legs to diabetes. My dad started his Law Enforcement career as a reserve officer and eventually went to the academy a second time when he was hired full time. And my baby brother entered the academy at the ripe old age of 19.

As I approached my teen years, my dad drifted out of my life and wasn't around for almost a decade. We eventually reconnected. By then,  life had taken me in a different direction and I had all but given up on my dream of becoming an LEO. I figured it just wasn't in the cards for me. I was now single handedly raising children of my own and I felt that I couldn't go into a profession that would take me away from them so often. Who would stay with them while I studied my arse off at the academy or when I started working and had to put in 14 hour (or longer) shifts? I knew that if I went into Law Enforcement, I'd miss many a holiday, weekend, birthday, etc... and I felt my babies needed me more than I needed to pursue my dream.

Flash forward 15 years. My grandfather isn't with us anymore. My dad is now retired. My brother has worked his way up the ladder and is now a Detective. And me? Well, I've rekindled my dream. My babies aren't babies anymore. They are older and independent. So, after a heart-to-heart with my dad, I've spent the last 6 months getting myself ready. I've always been fit, but now I work out with a much bigger purpose. To get into optimum shape for what lies ahead. I'm doing everything I can to educate myself on every aspect of what I will need to know and do. I signed up for the Citizen's Patrol Program at my local Sheriff's Office. I scheduled all the tests I need to take. Took the practice written and agility tests to further prepare myself. Unfortunately, I injured my knee during the obstacle course portion of the practice agility test. When test day came, I was worried my knee hadn't fully healed yet, but it felt great for several days before the test so I decided to go for it! I took the written portion (just found found I passed with a 90!) As the different stages of the agility test wore on, I felt my knee pain increasing. I passed the first 4 of the 5 stages of the test. Stage 5 was the 15 station obstacle course. When I had only 3 stations left, my knee gave out on me and I coudln't go on! I was so upset! But I told myself not to get discouraged. I will let my knee heal, continue to exercise (starting the INSANITY workout program next week), build my strength, endurance and stamina and do the test again. And this time, I will pass! I know it's going to be an uphill climb but I have the will and determination to do this! In the words of George Eliot, "It's never too late to become what you might have been".

That's my story. Well, the beginning of it anyway...

Don't apologize for being literate. I second Shane's comment--a refreshingly well-written (and proofread!) and thoughtful introduction. Welcome to the link. All things being equal you shouldn't need luck--but luck you'll need because the market is tight and competition fierce.

Welcome to PL from Ohio.  I agree with everyone else here.  Your introduction was well versed, informative and spectacular.  Thank you for sharing such a profound introduction with us.  That being said, I wish you the best of luck as you achieve your goals.

Thanks again to everyone for the warm welcome! It really does mean a lot. From everything I've seen here so far, PL is not only a great place for information and resources, but it's also an amazing support system.  Everyone is really encouraging and motivating. Believe me it does not go unnoticed. I look forward to getting to know the PL family!

To start welcome to PL and congrats on passing your written. Second thing i will say is it sounds like ya do have the determination to be a great officer. I say that cause as most will tell ya that in this line of work pain has no place and it sounded as if ya went tell your knee said thats enough. Keep working on it and get that knee healed and you will make it i'm sure of it .

I don't usually post anything in people's introduction post for the main reason that they usually suck.  That said, I must concur with the others and tell you that:

A. Your introduction post is by far the best introduction post I have ever run across

B. Your introduction post should be what everyone else should aspire to write.

I bid you welcome to PL and wish you luck in accomplishing your dreams and goals.
