First about me.

I'm 28 years old, married, and have a young child.  I currently sell insurance as my job.  I have a B.S. that doesnt do anything for me because I was lazy and stupid in college.  I have been with my company now for 4 years, and have recently come to realize that I am not doing anything worthwhile with my life.  Saving people a couple bucks a month on insurance is gravy, but I feel like I can make a difference elsewhere.

I have been looking at a possibly career change and that is what landed me here.  I have enjoyed reading thoughts and comments on the differences between the variety of jobs out there and have been trying to figure out if this is something I would like to pursue or not.  I have had an interest in LE and the like since being robbed at gunpoint about 6 years ago.  The experience opened my eyes to the world around me and I realized that there needs to be more good guys around to stop the bad guys to put it simply.

Thanks for having me and I appreciate any insight anyone can provide.

Welcome to PL.

It's a career that gives challenge and excitement about 10% of the time and in some cases is tediiuos, but rewarding the other 90%.  Check around your area law enforcement agency's and attend a citizens academy, do some ride alongs and or look into requirements to join a Reserve Program and see if the shoe fits.  You have to walk a beat in a cops shoes to know whether they fit you and maintaining your current career and working as a reserve may be the ticket to find out if the job is really what you expect it to be.  You won't get rich, but it will be a reward on so many other levels.

Good luck and advise on how the journey goes from time to time.  Make sure your family is okay with it because it is not a 9-5 office job as you wil find out and it can be rough on families with hours, dangers and not being around for children's events or programs.  It is very rewarding if you truely care about your community and the hard working people that live within it...

Welcome to PL from Ohio.  If you decide that this career field is the direction in which you want to go, you will find that it is not so much a career, as it is a lifestyle and calling.  I wish you the best of luck.

Welcome to Police Link and Hello from Frederick, MD

Don't beat yourself up about college, I graduated with my BA in 2008 and I won't tell you how old I am, and my degree isn't doing me any good trying to find a job.

My daughter is 28 and still in college, she has 15 credits to go. She wasted a lot of time and money when she left home to go to school when she flunked out I made her start taking online courses through Saint Leo University so that she would finish her degree.

I am a true believer that kids should not go to college right after high school, and I really don't believe that parents should pay for their kids education.

Good luck!!!!!
