That is not how you get a job.

You get a job offer by doing something like what I did for him

fixed their cameras, and ensured they were covered on replacement gear in case of trouble

I you think you get the good jobs by going through human resources

Then you are the one who is in bigger trouble than me

I am working on a book, which is coming along just fine...

and will be available on amazon

if you want to insult me again, just read my forthcoming book

and do the review, and try to get the media to buy it.

You live in a fantasy world.......... In some arenas, you might be able to land a job by doing a good job for someone....... Not in the arena of law enforcement.  You did your job for him by getting his cameras fixed and that's all....... NOTHING MORE AND CERTAINLY NOTHING SO NOTEWORTHY SO AS TO RECEIVE AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT.  As for his "parroting the official hiring policy of the LAPD,"  there is no such policy and he is not parroting anything.  Rather, it would appear that you have an agenda because somebody p!$$ed in your cereal and you're a little butt hurt.

You want to get into forensics with the LAPD or any other similar agency that employs forensic technicians, you get a degree in forensics.  BTW:  Forensics is more than being able to utilize a camera.  Once you have received your degree in forensics, you proceed to apply to several agencies and go through the same type of background investigation that police officers, sheriff's deputies, state troopers and every other law enforcement employee, sworn and non-sworn goes through.  The process includes all of the following:

1.  Initial application

2.  Written testing

3.  Oral interview

Provided you pass these, you may continue:

4.  Receive and complete and turn in your background information package

5.  Background investigation which includes:

A.  Pre-background interview

B.  Credit / Financial history 10 years back

C.  Criminal history / misdemeanor and felony arrest(s)  and conviction(s) (MUST DISCLOSE ALL)

D.  Driving record 10 years back

E.  Employment history 10 years back

F.  Places of residence 10 years back

G.  Education / high school and college transcripts plus any additional training and schooling certificates

H.  Medical screening

I.  History of drug use (MUST DISCLOSE ALL)

J. Psychological evaluation / written and oral evaluation with a psychologist

K.  Polygraph (pass/fail)

L.  Post background interview

6.  Provided you passed all of these phases and provided you scored higher than any of the applicants......... then and only then, are you given a conditional offer of employment.

7.  You have the equivalent of an FTO (MUST PASS EACH PHASE)

8.  You are on probation status for one year  (MUST PASS)

As for your writing skills and your desire to write a book............ If I base your skills off of reading your posts, my advice to you is to seriously consider taking a few English and writing classes and learn how to write.

Can't wait to see this book...I'll be sure to tell all of my friends about it. I'm sure they could all use the paper as fire starters this year for camping.

Judging by the way she writes, it would appear that her book might not be anything more than a pamphlet or leaflet.......... not enough to use as a fire starter unless you have a whole lot of them.

In my area, being a black man or a woman (black or white) is an added benefit. It's very hard to get hired on at the bigger departments around here if you are a white male! I'm not bitter, (I don't have to be) thats just the reality. Heck, the department heads will evencome out and say it if they are in the right mood!

Wow pretty racist Shane....I have heard this argument before and it is totally ridiculous and false.....Based on your logic the larger departments you speak of would be made up primarily of blacks and women...Name one department in your area where that is true....

Skoolcop, you are so wrong.  The way it REALLY works is you need to see a police officer.  The officer KNOWS you have an interest in law enforcement and KNOWS you would be an excellent officer.  He hands you an application and tells you that on Monday you will start as a deputy chief in charge of the forensics unit (or whatever unit you want).  If the department wasn't sexist misbeavens would have been immediatly hired.  As proof let me ask.  Do you see any women employed by the LAPD?  Forget forensics do they even have any female officers?

misbeavens hit on a secret that she will disclose in her new book "Anyone who doesn't immediatly offer me a job is sexist."

To answer the OP.  Being female is an advantage when seeking a job in law enforcement.  So long as you are equally qualified you will probably get hired over a male applicant.  This is not a bad thing in my opinion.  The more diversity we have in our departments the better we can serve the community.

From what I have heard expressed from law enforcement professionals, this.  As well as the critical need to hire officers who speak Spanish and other languages in order to better serve our diverse communities.

Sarcasm noted.  I wish the book had been out when I was applying.  Maybe I would have been hired before all of the females that were hired before me.

LAPD had the Nation's First Police Woman

In 1909, Los Angeles social worker Alice Stebbings Wells petitioned Mayor George Alexander and the City Council, requestnig that an ordinace providing for a Los Angeles Policewoman be adopted. Not only was the measure passed, but on September 12, 1910, Mrs. Wells was appointed as the nation's first female policewoman with arreste powers.

Many California cities had employed women as "Matrons" or "Workers" since 1890. These employees specialilzed in the care of female prisoners, and worked in the City and County Prisons and other penal institutions.

This is from an article that I saw on the LAPD website. Type "LAPD women" in your google browser. Click on the first link and the article will pull right up. Looks like the LAPD is the first agency in the country to battle sexism. I'm not sure if our gal has anything to stand on with her arguements.

And if you're wondering if that is the past, and now they're sexist.....An assistant chief, deputy chief, some captains, and a couple police adminstrators are women. They have several other patrol officers that are also women.

To EVERYONE who replied...

Thanks for the encouraging words. In my policing class, a captain came to speak with us. He brought his daughter with him (she was also an officer). After class, I jumped on the chance to speak with her. She works for Galveston Co. She said that after she left the academy, It took her almost a year to get a job and hinted that it was because she was female. Later I talked to my proffessor and he said that Texas was in need of female officers and it would be easy to get a job (if I qualified). I want to be a cop, but I just want to make sure that after college and the academy, that I could go to work and not waste my degree. That's all. I don't belive that most depts. are sexist, racist, or anything else. I also don't believe that just because I have boobs, that I should be hired. ;)  I work hard for everything in my life and this is no exception. I enjoyed watching everyone argue like children though. (my backup plan is teaching algebra in high school) lol

P.S.  The only lip gloss I wear is Carmex every now and then!!!!

Thanks for returning to your thread with more information, Aubrey3.  Welcome to PoliceLink.

FFYI- Recently, PL members have seen Forums posts by trolls who enjoy adopting a superior attitude as they denigrate law enforcement and law enforcment officers - directly or by inference.  When trolls display disrespect and hostility, members here tend to address it head on, rather than raise their pinkies as ladies might at tea.  You will find most PL members to be quite direct in cyber-manner.

Generally members handle disrespect with humor as you see here - particularly in a thread where the OP chooses not to address comments, or simply leaves the thread for awhile.

As you continue your reseach in threads here, you will find your query a very common one - a concern about "wasting" your degree.  Many Criminal Justice students wonder if CJ degree will lead to a job, as say, an Auto Mechanic's certificate might.  The officers here help put that idea into perspective, as Skoolcop has so generously outlined for you.

I will make a suggestion that next time, while enjoying others argue like children, your position as OP iwould be better served by directing the dialogue back to your own questions and concerns as you now are doing three days later.

The very best luck to you in your career pursuits.  You will find much expertise at PL.  And I think you can be reassured that most everyone here, civilians included, agree a pair of "boobs" would be a silly addition to SkoolCop's list of professional qualifications required in the field.

Ok, seriously, are you berating me for not responding sooner? Because I have 3 kids, a husband, I'm a full time student, PTA mom, and I find time to shower. 3 days is a very short time to get back on here, for me anyways. I am thankfull for the insight that I received on here from the majority. Please, don't make any more 'suggestions' for me!

I am sure nothing personal was meant by the comments of MarlyB.  Understand that we have a lot (understatement of the year) of one hit wonders who ask a question, maybe make a few comments and then disapear into the sunset never to be heard from again.  We certainly understand when someone gets busy and the kids and family should always come before social networking sites.

Thanks! I try to get on here every night before bed, but I started working out with the P90X system because I heard it was difficult for females to 'climb the wall' in the academy. I am doing everything I can to prepare because I don't want a job just because I'm female. My concern is that with the economy, would I have a hard time getting a job because i'm female?

Good afternoon Aubrey3.,Definately your family IS priority #1 and I respect you for that.I also know that everyone in my neighborhood is thrilled when I take a shower.I doubt seriously you would have a problem getting hired but ,keep in mind the economic situation the entire country is facing.THere are many things you will want to do prior to an application and/or testing.Lots of physical agility workouts, read all you can find en re to the police testing process. You evidently have a college degree or would would not be considering being a high school algebra teacher, ergo that is a major plus for you.You will receive extra points on your entrance exam for your college credit hours.--Much good fortune to you my friend.

I don't beieve so.  From the time I first applied to the time I eventually got picked up fro a non-sworn position....... 14 years.  Add two more for the sworn position with the same department.  I wish I had $5.00 for every person that I helped get hired along the way while I continued to wait.  Many of those people were females.  Historically, the wall has ALWAYS been the hardest obstacle for female applicants.  The only explanation I have is that women (my observation) try to climb the wall using their arms like their male counterparts instead of their legs which is a stronger muscle group for the women.  I have helped both male and female applicants with the wall.  Once they (the female applicant) started using their legs, they were over the wall in a snap.  If that is your only weakness, keep working out (especially your legs) at it.  It will eventually happen.

Aubrey3, let me assure you most heartily I have no interest in berating you.  Your family obligations, studies and/or job and community service are commendable.  You will find yourself at home among the many contributing professionals here obligated to a host of responsibilities.  Welcome to Policelink.

My suggestion had merely to do with your choice to make a value judgment without much background yet and the better strategy of participating over "watching" when a dispute arises in one's thread.  Maybe I was stating the obvious, or simply misunderstood you. It was only my wish your remark would not be misconstrued as having introduced yourself to an LE cyber-community with a degree of bemused superiority.  I am glad to find you well-received among the officers here.

Best of luck and enjoy your exchanges with the experts assisting you in your career quest.

I had so much trouble with the wall because of my 'counter-weight' (rear end). If I had done p90 workouts, it probably would have gone a little smoother, LOL! Good luck!

msbeahavens-I don't know of anyone who cares to hack into your browser or gives a rats a$$ about your donuts. For two days ,it would appear ,you have gone overboard to irritate and agitate, first by insulting Freezerburn and now degrading anybody who has more stars than you,.Quite frankly I find this to be a juvenile attitude. These stars only appear on our sites and by no means denote intelligence.I consider many, far more intelligent and wiser than I.

Are you serious or have you fallen that far out of touch with reality.  No one (including myself) gives a a rats fleshy hindquarters as to where you are or your GPS or for that matter, anyrhing else about you.  If you re-read the thread...... you, and only you, started the posts with you mistaken statement about the LAPD and a so called policy of being sexist towards omen applicants.  My comments as well as those made by others also are in reference to your assertion that just because you do your specific job at Nikon, that he is sopposed to offer you employment and that "that's how you get a job."  You want a job.........look at my prior comment on this thread, get off of PL and do as instructed.  No one is just going to hand you a job in any portion of LE without going through the whol process just like anyone else.

As for your latest assertion that you are being bullied.......... you are far away from the truth.  You make the comments that have made, you don't like the responses and then you have the nerve to say you have been bullied.  You make outlandish comments that have no basis of fact that are accusing a person or a deprtment of this kind of behavior, expect to be called out.  You don't like the responses to your statements.......... don't make the statements and put yourself out there like you did.

Be warned that your behavior as to this thread is in violation of PL TOU's and is now being monitored.
