PL on the real side, why do athletes make more than Teachers, LEO's, Firefighters, and the Military?  These folks as a profession have a super bowl every day in their actions and deeds to educate and protect you, me and all we love!  Where are the priorities!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a matter of priorities...It's a matter of what is making money. Everything has come down to a business. When police, teachers, and others can produce millions..billions...then they will be paid accordingly. LE is a business as well, and like sports, those in charge want to get the most product at the smallest price. Sadly, it is more cost effective to pay Albert Pujols 250 million to hit home runs than it is to pay me 50, 000 to keep people safe. Pujols draws in so much more money for what he does compared to what I do. The sad thing is that even though they are getting paid millions, some owner is making way more than that.

You got my point!  However, in my opinion it is about priorities and you said it money talks (that's the priority is important that we allow this to happen)!  I did not get in the military and LE for the money as I am sure you did not either!  It's a calling and we took it!  None of these professions should be living paycheck to paycheck!  There are military members on food stamps!

To me it goes to show you where society puts value.  Entertainment is more important nowadays and if you can get big contracts and money with little effort, then you are a success.  I don't believe that because many of us in LE do not do our job for money, fame, notoriety and contracts.  We do it because we are dedicated to preserving order and instilling trust.  We are the people that say, I shall make it safe for the masses to be entertained!  Entertainment for me is spending time with hte people that I enjoy being around, friends, family and enjoying nature.

LEO's and soldiers give it all for our nation, community and freedom to enjoy life's pleasures.  Words like priority and values may cause some to be offended, but the current defining tab in America is Money and until society places more importance on Public Service money is the guiding light that measures success in America instead of the underlying freedom...

Lonna, I'm with you on that one!  I would have took the ring and half of all that moron had and hit the bricks on him!  Public employees going through a divorce when the other was the cheater has to give up what they worked hard and long for!  I remember a story where a wife tried to have her husband killied and the victim had to give up half of his pension to his POS wife!  I believed the law was changed to stop this BS!

My 2 cents....I view an occupations "worth" as its value to society. Law Enforcement Officers are essential to public safety, Physicians are essential to health care, Firefighters are essential to save lives and propert and The Military is essential to our freedom. Athletes who make millions have little value to society, without them you just wouldn't have a game to watch.

The romans had it right as far as cheap entertainment goes!  A couple of lions and a criminal! We could save a few trillion dollars if we built an arena and let the criminals/animals have at it! Rename prisons and jails to staging areas!

Well Steve, fantastic concept, the lions and the criminals.I think Lonna is on the proper trail as well.I believe the sports figures need the extra millions to keep up their DRUG lifestyle.I equate these individuals with the Hollywood crowd. They can run a football 50 yards at a time and hit a baseball over the fence but could they do a simple general math problem? Are they capable of doing something positive instead of going to jail for their stupidity ,on a regular basis?Yep I could probably get accustomed to driving a new Mercedes every year, sending my rug rats to private school and residing in a mansion, but I believe my twenty seven years of badge wearing and being in the Army was good enough for my psyche and I guess I'll be buried in Potters Field, big deal.

CSIGUY said it spot on. This goes for police and firefighters who are consistently placing their lives on the line to protect the people of their community and are willing to jump in and help those where ever they are. There is no way that the taxpayers could pay us what we are really worth. All we want is to be able to raise our own families and not worry about juggling our bills and how we are going to afford to take care of our families. Now teachers are very important and should also be justly compensated provided they are held responsible for actually educating our children. This is why private schools are so good, the teacher is held responsible for his or her students and they actually get paid a decent wage, especially when you consider that they have 3 months straight off and work for less than 150 actual days.  The simple fact that these people who play sports are paid in the millions for playing a game that many of us like to play on weekends for fun even if not on a professional level. Same for entertainers who sing and act in movies. Yes it is a talent but for some reason many Firefighters and even the occasional LEO has a great voice and police Officers are very much actors who must convince very suspicious people that we know more or can do more than humanly possible so that they believe it, now THAT's acting! The same thing cam be said for our friends and co-workers who are Para-medics or EMT's etc. We all have to be very convincing in our roles for the well-being of our communities. Make no doubt, you could never pay us what we are worth, but please pay us to enjoy a decent wage and retirement and take care of those of us who have forfeited our health and especially those of us who have lost our life while serving you and take special care of our families.

It is pretty simple. . . . .the atheletes are the producers (producing a profit for a company) while civil servants are lumped in with the consumers (those that sponge off of the public dole).  NOTICE. . . .I said "lumped in with the consumers".  Because civil servants get paid off of the public dole, there is no production of moneys for a company. . . in fact, the public dole is a drain on a company's money.  Is the service necessary?  YES!  Is it wanted. . . .hmmmm, only when it is needed by the specific person that is being questioned.

There were many times while I was on the department that people voiced issues with the civil servant.  Some of them were, "Where is the common sense in buying things?"  i.e. why spend $3,000.00+ on the newer LED light bars when the older technologies (rotating lights) were much cheaper at $500.00 or so?  (among other issues)  This becomes more prevalent in smaller communities whose moneys are stretched to the limit.  Other issues that came up was that, "Why do they (civil servants) need more money when I'm barely making minimum wage?"

I'm not saying that I agree with these comments but these are some of the issues that come up.  The wages of civil servants is also something that hits a little closer to home with people when they have to pay their different taxes.  Many of these people don't go to sports events or when they do, they gripe a little about the ticket price and the cost of food there, but for the most part they are escaping their current events.  We as civil servants do not offer that same escape. . . .except for those that deserve a trip to the jail. . . .or, God forbid, a trip to the hospital.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.

I hear ya!  Look in to what you said and you will find a revolution for two or three or four reasons, why countries were toppled!  Yet, we continue to feed the pig!  I am not a sports fan and could give a rat's arse about any of it.  When I am working my cases and looking at all that involves, and payday creeps in My first thought is I don't get paid enough to do what I, you and many other LEO's do for this job!

I also, look around at other LEO's and I think to myself or have a conversation with my wife who is also LE about those same LE folk who do thier eight and skate!  All public employees have the same issues of the dedicated and those who need to retire or change professions!  If folks want entertainment without high prices and overpaid athletes.  Suggest they take a ride along with an LEO or visit a jail behind the scenes.  You and I know they won't be disappointed by the steps necessary to keep them safe on the cheap!

That is the other thing. . . .PUBLIC PERCEPTION.  How often does the public see civil servants doing their jobs?  When they're last nerve is being taxed because traffic is backed up because of the crash up ahead?  When they drive by the fire department and see the firemen playing basketball, or just sitting around the firehouse getting paid while that same civilian doesn't get paid unless they are digging a ditch or flipping burgers or actually doing something?  The officers and ambulance personnel smoking and joking at the stop and rob while taking a little break from the boredom.

No, they don't see that often the fire personnel dripping wet with sweat running out of a burning building with a lifeless body trying to resusitate it before it's too late. . . .the officer that is holding the hand of a trapped victim in an automobile crash awaiting the jaws of life to arrive. . . .the ambulance personnel crawling into an automobile that was mangled beyond recognition trying to hold onto life until the jaws can cut enough of the vehicle away to get the victim out. . . . .or after all of that effort, the feeling of worthlessness when that fight for life. . .is. . . .lost.

Perception is a powerful thing for those footing the bill.  If you don't like the service at a restaurant. . .you get up and leave without leaving a tip.  If you don't like the ticket the officer gave you. . . .you still have to pay your taxes.  You don't know how many times I've listened to older adults complain about having to pay property taxes for schools that their grown children don't use anymore, yet they don't want to hear that when their children were in school. . . .the retired folks of that day were complaining about the same things.

I remember in '04 we did a brief tribute to Tillman at the old Giant Stadium. Pat Tillman gave up a 3.6 million dollar contract to go fight in Afghanistan.  He was shot three times I believe, details of his death are a bit sketchy.

I Must admit, I love FB and can't wait til the Superbowl, However I can do Without the Silly @ss Half Time Shows.  In the wake of the alarming amount of Officers down in '12, I say use that time and  tribute them instead, just a thought.

This wandering thread virtually overlooks the role of the teacher in our society - except in passing or to carp on "accountability" as a means to cast aspersions on that profession's authority.  Time was these professions were all on the same side.  We had a stronger society for it.

Now, grappling for a position at the shrinking trough of public funds, elbowing each other out of the way while swallowing whole the myth of the "slacker teacher" as a convenience to cut taxes for education.  Maligning our children's first encounter with an authority figure outside the home.  Denigrating the integrity of the first authority figure who daily teaches the value of respecting the law in a civil society.  Nauseating.

The breakdown of society begins with this kind of twisted scapegoating.  No wonder kids don't respect cops.  Look how society disrespects teachers.

All the way to the ballgame.
