Anyone else have issues with insomnia? I did 3rd shift for so long and doing 3rds only made it worse to this day. Any tips of tricks to help fall asleep quick and wake up fast? I can only sleep when Im supposed to be awake! :/

I don't suffer insomnia, so to speak. I can usually fall asleep pretty quickly, but have a hell of a time getting up in the mornings. There are those nights that I wake up at some unGodly hour and have trouble going back to sleep though!

I'm traditionally a night owl. Love to stay up till the wee hours of the morning. But, since I have to be at work at 7am, I'm usually in bed by 11 at night. Between the Military, day shift at the security job I had after Active Duty and day shift at the PD, you'd think I could get up early in the morning easily.... NOT!!

My parents were that way... able to get up before dawn without an alarm clock. WTH??? (lol) Me? Even after 30+ years of getting up early (usually before dawn), I still have to have an alarm clock (have a second alarm clock as a backup). Even then, I'm slow to move until I have some coffee in me (lmao).

 feel your pain I just recently started experiencing it  due to stress and it stinks big time last night I went to bed at 10pm woke up at 2 fell back to sleep at 4 and now I am up for the day... it is very draining so I feel for you.. Ive thought about getting an ambien prescription but I don't like taking stuff I never even take cold meds so I'm highly sensitive to everything...I'm hoping when I  get settled with my new life my sleep will return :(

Usually I wake up at 4am despite what time I go to bed...I could go to bed at 11pm and I am wide awake by 4am ready to start my day so I use that time to study...it still stinks though...I know it's due to all the stress in my life.. going through a divorce..

No doubt about it!! Stress will screw up your sleep schedule!! Been there, done that. You need to find a way to relieve that stress. One of my favorite ways to relieve stress is called "Motorcycle Therapy" - taking off on the Harley. Doesn't matter if it's a 30 minute ride, or an 8 day road trip!

I honestly have no time to relieve stress I work two jobs  53 hours a week , go to school and  I am a mom and   I'm remodeling a house basically by myself... :) it will get better when I get settled in my own place...I have faith!!!

At some point in time, you need to take a moment for yourself just to unwind. It doesn't have to be 2 or 3 day vacation. It can just be a matter of finding a quiet hillside in the evening and watching the sunset. Anything to have a few moments to relax. If that means finding a babysitter for the little one(s) for that short time, then do it. I'm a firm believer in stress reduction. Stress takes it's toll on the human body!

Need to make your 'sleeping place' dark and quiet.  When i worked nights, i generally couldn't tell if it was day or nightin my bedroom, I covered all the bedroom windows and used a fan to generate a quiet 'white noise' and found that made sleeping any time much easier.

Bump. I put thick black trash bags over the windows when I worked 3rd. It was pitch black in there and I slept like a baby.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm convinced we're related  Since the age of 18 I've taken on Random 3rd shifts.  Now where I'm at, I sometime have to work 12-14 hours get home at 2-3am and be back at another venue by 8am.  A few months back my Physician prescribed me with something, but It left me Comotosed and I actually missed work twice.  First time this happened, My coworkers thought I died or something, lol'z.  So now I'm back at square one, I guess my witching hours are at Night.
I don't think I've actually slept a good 8 hours since my first daughter was born.
 Melatonin works for me!  We work 12 hour shifts, 3/2 2/3, and switch from nights to days/days to nights every two weeks.  I've been on this rotation for over five years.
DonnaLynn, is this an all natural vitamin, or is it prescribed?   I think I may have seen something like this at Rite-Aid.  My sleep schedule is really starting to take it's toll, but I wanted to go with a somewhat natural Cure or remedy.   I've already tried all the above mentioned-Nothings worked so far.
It's natural (it's what your body produces to make you sleepy).  I love this stuff because when you wake you are not groggy.  Tylenol PM and the likes makes me so groggy and if I am not in pain why take tylenol when it's unnecessary.
Yes, you can get it at any drug store in the vitamin/mineral section.  It comes in the 1.5 or 3 mg.  I take the 1.5s.
Found the Melatonin b6 2mg/Melatonin 3mg at our local Rite Aid, and took it about 35-40 minuts ago.  It was $6.59 and they had a buy1, get1.  I'm not going to fall off my chair or anything, but I do feel it working.  For me to be a little tired anytime before 1am(my witching hours) is rare.
Thanks DL
Ok, I inserted a silly video of a commercial-yes-I'm getting tired....... Still have to walk the Mutts though.
You gotta do whatever you gotta do. I sat outside tonite, burned some wood, drank some adult frosty malt beverage and enjoyed the peace and quiet (well, until it started raining - lol)
On my old job I got up at 4:30 am and worked 14 hrs a day. I wouldn't go to bed untill 11pm. Now I work 12hr shifts and rotate between 7pm to 7am and then back to 7am to 7pm every couple of days. But no matter what shift Im on I come alive at 4:30 am, even when Im working nights. Doc said that I have ingrained my enternal clock with that time and need to learn to live with it.  But as for sleeping during the day while working nights, black windows out turn air down to 60 degrees and turn fan on to drown any noise other than security alarm, I also have a main switch that turns all the house phones off.
