Hi, I've been cruising the site and forums for a few days so I thought I should introduce myself.  I am considering a career change to become a police officer.  I haven't enjoyed my desk job at an engineering firm for a few years now and I want to do something where I can be active and I can help people.  I have thought for a while that I would really enjoy being a police officer and I think I would be good at it too.  To complicate matters a little bit, my wife and I are seriously considering going over seas with a missionary organization in a few years and that leaves me with a few questions.  First, I am 30 right now.  If we leave in two years and stay for four, I would be 36 when we get back.  Would it be harder for me to get a job at 36 than at 30?  How much does age play a part in the hiring process?  Which leads me to another question: if it would be harder for me to get a job when I come back would I be better off applying now, going through the academy and working for 2-3 years and then going over seas?  I would think that would make it a lot easier for me to get a job when I come back if I already had a good 2-3 years experience, or would that not be a good thing to do to whichever department hired me now?

Thanks for your time and any help you can give me, I really appreciate it.  I really would like to become a police officer, I just want to do it in the correct way.  Thanks again.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a Degree or prior Military experience?

I have a BA with a double major in Intercultural Studies and Bible, and I have an Associates Degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design.  But, no criminal justice and no military experience.

In reference to your question the big thing that I want to address is your trip you want to take. To me it seems like this missionary trip is important to you and there is nothing wrong with that. It is quite good actually, HOWEVER, I would suggest taking this trip before working to become an LEO or well after you have served a department for 10 to 20 years.

Here is the reason. If you don't already know the law enforcement field is extremely competitive right now and difficult to get into if you only have one thing or another such as in your case you have the education component down. Due to this fact LE agencies can be VERY picky.....VERY.

So here is the issue (and its not going to be your age) it is that trip you want to take. If you do your trip before and then devote your time to becoming an LEO by all means. Some of the experiences that I am sure you will have during a missionary mission will be good to mention when you start applying.

If you wait to take the trip, however, until you become an LEO....you may never become an LEO. You may ask why I say this. I say this because what department (no matter the size) is going to spend all their time, money, and energy to do a background on you, do medical tests, put you through the academy (if you didn't get it before applying), put you through field training and finally let you "fly solo" just to have you leave (after serving for 2-3 years) for a 4 year long trip?

If you did get hired and put in those 3 years and then left it would be VERY unlikely for the department to "hold" your position. As law enforcement we need bodies now more than ever. Thus if you left for that trip you would very likely have to resign.

So to sum this up. I would take the trip first and then work towards your goal of becoming a police officer. Even coming back at age 36, if you are healthy, you would still be good to go for most agencies.

Just my two cents. Good luck!
