Okay I never thought it would happen to me, but it finally did. I was out with the drug team making a bust on a business when I ended up using both sets of my issued handcuffs. Then I had to leave the scene because one of persons we arrested needed to go to the local hospital. So now I have no idea who has them, and where they went to.

What do you guys do to identify your cuffs? Whats the best way to mark them? How often does this happen to you guys?

I have each of my cuffs engraved with my initials. A trick I had learned from my time. A cheap engraving tool is easy to find usually. Doesn't have to be too fancy to get the job done.

I engrave my name and department into each set of cuffs.  I have never lost a set.  We also carry flex-cuffs, so first chance I get, the cuffs are removed and flex-cuffs are put on.

like those guys said, my badge number is engraved on all my cuffs. If you have black cuffs I've seen some guys use white out to mark their badge numbers as well.

We are issued nickle plated cuffs. I purchased my own sets of black cuffs. Easily identifiable.

You can't cure stupid.

Like everyone else has said........ etch or inscribe your name  and some other identifying factor into such equipment.  This may not prevent your cuffs from getting lost but at least you have some way of identifying them in case you do.

Mine have my badge number and initials engraved in them. Since our Drug Task Force is local, it's not an issue getting mine back.

Okay awesome responses! I will definitely do that once I get them back. Just talked to my sarge and she's got a bunch of the cuffs from that day. Just gotta pick two lol!

I'm not sure about those pink handcuffs, think I would get harrased by to many people in the department.   Now green on the other hand, i'll take those. That's actually not a bad business idea, desinger handcuffs! Not just colors, but sports teams, designs, logos.

I have a pair of blue (Safariland) and a pair of nickel (peerless), both engraved. You have to watch out with the colored ones, though, as some agencies use them to denote status or threat level, etc.

Meh... Harrasment only makes for tougher skin. I actually like it when *Frequent Flier's* request I do not give them the pink cuffs lol. Since you're Sarge has a pile I would suggest only taking Peerless or Hiattes. Just my .02 cent's.

ALSO PCSO_Explorer: I love you're quote "Any sudden hand movements will render your birth certificate a useless piece of paper" I so gotta use that one haha...

I also engrave mine. And I try to keep a few extra pair in the car somewhere. Usually in my duty bag, Just in case.

Cuffs are like spare mags - ain't no such thing as "too many."

Unless your wife/significant other is angry with you and you have some at home - then I'd run...or at least have a cuff key on me somewhere.

A metallic Sharpie works wonders on black cuffs.
