I suppose i should post here, i have to say this website is very nice. This would really help someone become a LEO. All I will say is that I'm a senior in High school and I am quite certain i want to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. Of course, im still deciding  whether being a police officer or sheriff's deputy is right for me, what degree is right for me (I'm thinking a Bachelors in crim. justice?) if i should stay in hot, dreadful texas or go to a city with more rain and cooler weather (But that would only be for my career, could be a good experience though right?!), but the city i'm in now is safe, pays good, and i suppose i know more about this city than i do anywhere else. Anyways, this is the only job i think i would enjoy. I just don't want to be sitting behind a desk all day pushing a pencil, or something of equal pointlessness. Even if i got paid more for it... Confucius said it best: "If you love your job, you never have to work a day in your life." Anyways, i go for my first ride along soon, and am excited, nervous, anxious, etc. about it. Sorry to post a block of text guys! But thanks for reading it if you do.

Hello from NC.. welcome to PL.  You are really going to enjoy your ride along.  It is fun and you get the opportunity to learn a lot!  I know how hard it is making the right career choice.  Just keep in mind there are so many possibilites in Law Enforcement.  As far as what you should major in at College... I would look at choices which might advance your career should you not wish to become an Officer that does patrol.. What if you wanted to become a Detective later on or work with the State or Federal Government as an Agent?  For example, if I wanted to be a Crime Analyst, I would probably major in Psychology or Statistics with a minor in CJ.  Just wanted to throw that out there.  I am certainly not an expert at which major you should choose.. I would definitely ask around at different departments and leave the door wide open for possibilites.

Hello from Ohio.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  You will find that a career in Law Enforcement can be a very rewarding one.  Once you start, you will never want to do anything else.  Welcome to the site.

Welcome to PL from SC!

Your statement on not wanting to be stuck behind a desk pushing pencils for your chosen profession was one of the prime motivators for me choosing LE as a career over 20 yrs ago in college! (Although I found myself doing that very thing -- paperwork, paperwork, paperwork!  Now, it's mostly computerized, so you are fortunate to enter the game at this stage in the technological history of our profession.)

You can major in just about any of the social sciences (sociology, psychology, etc) for a good foundation, but you are correct -- a school which offers a reputable CJ program in which to major is your best bet for an LE-oriented education. Back when I went through, my alma mater had one of only 10 or so "Colleges of CJ" in the nation, but a few years after getting out, the University downgraded it (much to the alumni's chagrin) to only a "School" under the College of Humanities or the Arts, or something of that nature. That's one choice that was definitely the wrong one for our great Currell College at USC, which had been around since an act of the state legislature back in the early 70's.

The ride-along program is sure to help you along with your perspective on what you like and don't like about LE; but if it's your final choice of career in life, you won't regret joining the ranks of the Blue Brotherhood..

Thanks guys! And yes, the computers and new technology will be a BIG help. Especially since i am familiar with that stuff. And yeah, college is confusing me right now, its complicated. I am trying to find out "Accredited colleges" here, and i need to ask them what would be the best classes and courses to take to become a LEO.... But yes, all other jobs seem to be boring and less rewarding in comparison.

Welcome to PL from the great swampy state!  LOL  Cat_D doesn't mean it when she says implies more than one good school.  I'm surprised she didn't end it with a resounding "Geaux Tigers!"  LMAO

Welcome to Police Link from Missou.Catwoman nailed it en re to the type of degree.I majored in C.J. and minored in Psych and wished I had done the opposite.Actually I took so many courses I was 6 credit hours short of a degree in Psych.

Welcome to Police Link and hello from Frederick, MD.

I agree with Dave I should have majored in psych and minored in Criminal Justice. I found that I am really into forensic psychology but now is not the time to spend 50k on my Masters in Psych.

Good luck

First, welcome to the link from TN. Second, Catwoman and the others are right, but I agree with them for different reasons. Law enforcement is a wonderful career. But it is dependent on being PHYSICALLY able to do the job. I was on the job 6 years when I was injured and told that I may not be able to return to the job. I had no training or education to do anything else. So remember there are tons of degrees you can use in LE, but a criminal justice degree is not much good outside of the profession. The others suggested Psych, which is good, so is Organizational Leadership and Developement. What ever you decide, stick with it, follow through, and always stay safe.

Thanks for the tip T_9!!! Luckily, I have a pretty big interest in psychology, but i'm not sure if i'd want to do anything related to that as a career.
