Lets kick this off.

I dont know if anyone has asked about this but I wanted to see whats the hot item especially for the night guys.  I'll give my spill.  I've never drank coffee and about 2 months into my deployment to Iraq, I was given something called "Boom Boom" which is an Iraqi energy drink with nicotine in it (I never smoke either so that was the first nicotine in my body).  After a couple of those, I started drinking redbulls when I had those fantastic 18 hour patrols/checkpoint/vehicle search days and now I drink that crap like water but I'm not in 140 degree temp wearing 100 pounds of gear anymore so I've noticed a little weight gain.

Whats your take?

I have been drinking coffee all my life.  In my younger days I would have several cups a shift.  Now I have one cup in the AM and maybe another if I start to drag.    I have tried energy drinks and didn't think much of them.  I have my coffee black with no sugar or cream so I don't have a problem with weight gain.  Some energy drinks have a lot of sugar while other state that they have none.  I would think the high sugar content in those that do would not be good for you.   I have also read somewhere that coffee is better for you and reduces chances of bladder and colon cancer.  Don't know if that is true or not.  But like everything else, if you over do it, it can't be good.

So is it safe to say I should take up black coffee, atleast to cut down on the need for the energy drink.  My wife drinks coffee and has been telling me its much healthier as long as you drink it black.  Thing is, I seen people who work with and they seriously have 60 dollar heated coffee mugs so they can have coffee all day.  Any recommendations on ways to cut back without losing so much energy.  Sounds dumb now that i'm use to it, If i go a day without at least a couple, I wear down pretty quick.  Someone told me to try caffine pills but i'm not much on taking pills.  Anything else?

I'm and old timer and definately go for coffee, I drink it with a little half and half, i like a little protein in my coffee to bind the tannins, though I drink it black on occasion.  Avoid sugar, so don't do 'energy drinks' in the past on very rare occasions i sould take 'no-doz' or caffine pills.  I like to spread my coffee drinking out, my morning cup is started before 0730 hrs, and I'm still workig on it now (0845 hrs.) though it's a large cup that holds almost a pint.  I'll switch to green tea (no sugar or milk) at lunchtime and drink just water in the evening, though on rare occasions I will drink decaf. coffee or tea in the evenings.

I too am old school and prefer coffee. However, I like mine sweet and blond, still only 11 cal per serving if you use the fake stuff and creamer that you can count calories LOL. My son prefers the energy drinks and my husband likes the 5 hr energy so it's your choice. When I was still on the street I had one of the mugs you are talking about.

I personally prefer coffee, but I have a friend who got through college on 5 Hour Energy shots.  His wife tried one and it aggravated her heart condition.  Her heart started beating really fast for an uncomfortable amount of time.  Since that I have been weary to try the 5 Hour Energy shots.

I am a dedicated coffee drinker, a "must-have" in the morning however that won't carry you all day so I drink a nutritional drink called Zija XM3 Plus.  It has all the nutrients and  vitamins your body needs to spark a natural energy release  without the artificial sugars plus an energy drink to keep your energy level up all day.  When all is said and done, isn't it better to drink something you can benefit from healthwise than just something to get you thru the day?

I drink coffee.  I like it black and strong.  I don't really count but drink at least six cups a day, maybe more.

I've never tried energy drinks or other such stuff.

I think energy drinks/shots are a death sentence and should not be consumed by any health-conscious person. It gives a person what I consider an unbelievably hazardous amount of stimulants. The first time I ever consumed a five-hour energy shot was after a heavy session of PT and I came "this" close to calling for medical assistance. I honestly believed I was going to DFO; my heart felt like it was going to explode and my head felt like it was going to seize.

I can't understand what people are thinking when they consume a Monster or Red Bull before or even during a workout. I just want to tell them "Your heart will explode!!!"

I agree with UMPDaux about the 5-hour energy drinks.  I think they are dangerous and if you have any medical problems on board to begin with then you are just asking for trouble  !

XM+ is the perfect combination of Zija Smart Mix and XM3 Energy Drink! It is an all-natural beverage blended from the miracle plant — Moringa oleifera — considered by many to be the most nutrient-rich plant ever discovered.  It comes in a powder form that you just mix and drink.

XM+ is overflowing with cell-ready nutrients, antioxidants, minerals, omega oils and vital proteins. Zija is the first, and only, company to channel Moringa’s dramatic nutritional properties into a refreshing, nourishing energy beverage to help you maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Zija gives you balance and variety as nature intended.

I have been using this product for almost 4 months and my bloodwork shows my glucose had dropped 18 points , blood pressure is excellent and I have energy that I thought was long-gone.  There are safe ways to get your energy back and I highly recommend this one.

Community coffee, no doubt, and maybe a nice Creole style pastry to wash it down?

I was a Monster man before my injury. I bet I was sucking 64oz from 0400 until 2200. It kept me going non-stop until midnight and I didn't have any wacky side effects.

My wife has turned me into a coffee drinker. I gotta have flavored creamer and sugar though.

I'll drink a cup or two of coffee during the winter, but my "go to" drink is a sugar free Rockstar. I drink one (rarely 2) 16oz per shift. When drinking anything containing caffeine, you have to remember to drink plenty of water with it to avoid dehydration.

Here is my response: Don't drink coffee, makes me sick. Don't drink energy drinks either, too much sugars for my good and make me jittery. Rule here at mob station is no energy drinks for the deploying Joes. Too many drinking them instead of water and getting dehydrated and having to go to sick call. Also quite a few were trying to pass alcoholic energy drinks through, which a major no go at this station...

Romans, sounds good minus the sugar. Although I am gonna confess I have a compulsion to drink sweet iced tea, southern style of course.

Thats great information, I've honestly never heard of this.  I'm gonna look into it.   Do you get that from the average store, or is that something to find at a GNC/nutrient store.  I looked for them right after I read this but it seems they are mostly online order.

Thanks for the info though.  Woke up this morning, my wife goes "babe, you ready for that coffee now?"  lol.   I said yea let get it over with ha.  After reading this, it def confirmed my thoughts of how ridiculous my energy drink "addiction'' is.

Also, in the same catagory, what is everyones thoughts on multi vitamins.  Now I just take one a days but alot of my fellow Marines take a laundry list of pills every morning and some of them are serious health freaks which always makes me wonder is there not a thing as too much artifical and not enough natural?

Just wanted to update, I went and bought a good coffee maker, sweet n low, and some 0 calorie vanilla creamer and had myself a nice cup of coffee for the first time since I was a kid.  I was seriously surprised what a simple cup of coffee accomplished vs 2-3 redbulls I would have drank today.  Now, could I have downed a cup of "black" coffee, Not sure i'll ease in there.

I also investested in some green tea and ginsing.

Coffee - strong (sometimes referred to as "Bold") - Black - No Sugar. Used to drink flavored coffees on occasion - stopped that cause I didn't care for the "filmy" feeling in my mouth from the oils used to add the flavoring. I don't really care for Starbuck's though. That stuff tastes like burnt coffee to me.

I drink my two cups of coffee just about every morning. My coffee of choice is Dunkin Donuts with real cream. I've never had an energy drink.  I hear how wired one can get on some energy drinks, and then they "crash". I've never crashed from coffee!

The "crash" people report is a post-carbohydrate crash. If you drink your coffee straight up (no sugar or creamer), you won't likely experience that. Likewise for energy drinks--choose the sugar-free ones.

Did those who drink it strait always drink it strait, or is that something that came with time and getting use too?

I'm enjoying the input this is getting.  Great to see others insight on things like this.
