Always wondered how and who chooses the gear on a LEO's belt? for example, which firearm? and other equipment? there is only space for so much right? and what determines what goes on the belt. and finally which equipment is paid for by your department and which is out of your pocket?

This question was posed a few days ago. I am guessing you may be bored. The chief or someone in staff makes the determination.

Ok, each department is different. Our department issues you EVERYTHING except shoes, socks, t-shirts and underdrawers! As far as office type equipment we can get that from the department but really! If I need one I buy one.

Yes, all the way down to the pens. No Dollar General ink pens only Walmart. Some agencies furnish undies. Sgt's and above boxers. Below the rank of Sgt. Thongs.

Troopers - silver Cross Pen and Pencil

Sgt and above - gold Cross pen and pencil.

A good Trooper always has a pen. Never gives the Cross to a violator.  Other than that, if they don't issue it, it doesn't go on the belt. AND, it goes on the belt the way they tell you to wear it. The only difference is the bug. Department approved but it can be your own. It's not visible.

yeah, our dept picks out almost everything.  we have x26 tasers now along with the oc spray and asp baton.  s&w m&p .45s with two extra mags. the belt can get crowded pretty quick.  we can't turn our extra mag pouches horizonal either.  taser must be cross draw to avoid confusion.

we gripe about having to wear dress like pants that tear almost everytime you jump a fence but they don't want us wearing BDU/511 pants because they don't want us to look too agressive.  our tactical units wear those.  shoes were also dept issue but it is easy to make a claim to wear a different brand.
