I have seen many times over officers that are not prepard to fight hand to hand, seems they think that as long as they have tasers, asp, and pepper, and their sidearm then they are ready to go. i have been in 3 officer involved shootings all three times i was on patrol. i have been on a swat team and commander of a narcotics team, i have done my share of high risk entrys. out of all , i have been in more hand to hand fights about 20 times more than with any weapon... every cop needs a good work out routine. if you dont have the ability to defend yourself then you can't defend anyone else. having knowledge of weapons is a must but having knowledge of your own ability to take on a meth head that has been on a 3 week bender that has no weapon but want to take you on hand to hand .... you cannot wait for back up it is not always avalible. i have seen many officers freeze up when challenged with a suspect ready to fight..as i have told my guys what are you going to do when you face this situation, call the police....when you go out in public and are confronted by one that you have arrested, are you ready to rumble..i live in the gym and have a very tough work out routine because the biggest arms i have come out of my shirt..I am always ARMED.

I hear ya ODIN.......I work out 3 times a week. i have it easy though, my best friend is a personal trainer. I'm a light weight right now. (190 lbs) I want to get up to about 225lbs. and bench at least 300. Thats the main reason why i work out too. I always think, the criminals work out too. What do they do while they sit in jail? Pump iron or other inmates. You always have to stay 2 steps ahead of the shit heads. Taking a few self defense courses is good too. I'm looking into a few....not sure which to go with. I want someting that i can use. Like presure points, and ground moves

nerve strikes are good, but they dont always work... power up, i have a picture of a thug that is pressing 425 on a bench for my motivation. also have a viedo of inmates showing each other how to defeat the police in a pat down situation. they are out there and are waiting for the right time...

goes back to work ethic, how bad do you want it..you can juice all you want but it wont help if you are sitting on your ass. there are many supplements that are legal that can keep you ahead of the game. roids are the easy answer and i dont respect easy..go heavy or go home..

Well, when I was just a young hell for leather cop in my mid 20's I was 5'11' and a whopping 145lbs. Back then we were only allowed to carry mace, (not OC), and aluminum 2 cell flashlight, and a .38 revolver. Everything else had been taken away by a Mayor who was a liberal wuss that was worried about votes and complaints. Unless you have damn good reason you can't shoot people and mace doesn't work except against cops, so you had your hands and fists. We got into many fights and managed to win every damn one of them. My hands have been broken quite a few times simply from hitting hard with small bones. G Major arthritis now but we survived and learned how to do so by means of what we referred to as being explosive violence. You took him down, quickly and hard. Be grateful for those tasers, asps, and OC as well as the other non-lethal stuff you have access to. Still, never forget how to quickly take down an subject as you will still have to resort to the 'old fashioned' way

The hell I didn't! Lots of forms to fill out when you end up taking the idiot to the ER to be stitched back up, not to mention getting your hand reset. LOL!

you did bring up a good point, explosive violence, that catches officers off guard the most.

I believe it is the whole package. Being in better-than-good shape is standard. Command presence takes care of a lot of the hands on issues. Cardio and strength are a wonderful combo. I can outlast most confrontations. But I have moved into a different line of thinking in the last 10 years. Even with a little martial arts background I no longer feel obligated to go WWF with these monkeys. I take care of business with fierce aggression and then back off and deploy whatever if ist is still necessary ....Taser, K9, Beanbag, lethal force, flashlight, OC, whatever. Where I work, your backup is usually no farther away than 30 seconds. And I mean literally, 30 seconds. So, for us there is no real bragging rights to just beat the cr** out of someone to say you did. We are big on two-zees for most everything you do. Okie-Kwan-Doe only works so long.

Last night, one of our motor guys got into it with a turd. Punching, hitting, defensive tactics moves, breaking this and that. Our guy today has a swollen fist. Heck, I had to block a kick to the face years ago and ended up jamming a thumb. The thumb still isn't exactly the same. Robo can attest to injuries that seem to heal only to haunt you later on.

I completely support the lifestyle of Lifetime Fitness for coppers. You've got to be able to git-r-done. But, Odie, keep in mind you're a doggone Phillistine. I was talking to one of our females who is a long time vet and a real fire brand. She stands about 5'2". She was matter of fact by saying that her threshold of force is significantly lower than our 6'2" lead defensive tactics instructor. She just gets to shoot sooner.

I teach PT at the Academy when not working. I stress Lifetime Fitness, endurance training with a balance of strength training.

Lastly, I emphasize to my crew to always be in Condition Yellow. And to have this philosophy always in operation: "You can be as nice as you want. Just have a plan to kill everyone in the car."

Thoughts?

One thing I think everyone is forgetting is the WILL to win. I dont care how good of shape you are in, if you dont have the will to win you will lose. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Personally I have been working with a trainer for about 2 months, not to increase strength, but endurance.

All thats is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Cardio and strength training along with practicing tactics is a need. However like Tick214 said we can't forget the "Warior Spirit". A trainer said it best to me when he told me "If I ever have to come to a scene were you have just been killed in a fight with a suspect I better find you laying on the ground nude because you tried everything you could including taking your socks off to try and choke the guy out".

Odie,....See ? You know what a Phillistine is !

You other guys hit it, too! Right on the money. The 'warrior within' is ultimately what enables survivorship. Dang, how I missed that in my entry I do not know.

And having arms as big as small trees doesn't hurt either.

cardio is one of the things you need, but weight training is a must, alot of my guys can out run me, but alot of the times they need help putting a suspect down.. you might be able to catch a bear but what then, time to lift, as much as you can.

i do martial arts.. and a lot of ppl in LE.. say that will not help in the street.. ok, but what if the perp does not have a gun, and i don't wanna use any sort of weapon.. why not take him down with an arm bar or, bend his wrist to take him down and cuff him.. or use all the pressure points.. i mean i will not rely soley on martial arts.. but my sensei was in LE and he used it.. what you guys think about that?

Two words Kciampa, Street Fighting. You fight to win and you will win, you have to as being second can get you killed. There is nothing nice or polite or fair when the shoe drops, You attack and attack hard and violently and suppress the threat immediately and decisively. Works for me.

KCIAMPA, robo let you in on a very good secret. explosive violence, go from no threat to defeating the bad guy before he can get the move on you. however their are thugs that are in the gym right now and have had martial arts too...

fortunately for me.. my martial arts training is very unlike what you see in most schools.. it's all about contact.. so what if i hit the big guy in the ribs or the stomach.. throw him on his back.. and the same is done to me. .it's very hard to explain.. but alll i can say it's a lot more intense then a lot of the schools out there, where a 7 year old has their black belt.. trust me

I agree you have to be physically and mentaly strong. Train for it everyday. I fell off the gym wagon due to a back injury but I'm back now. We have alot of guys that are out of shape and it makes you wonder sometimes what if?

If you haven't heard of CQD, you should investigate it. Originated by Duane Dieter. The most simplistic, yet devastating form out that I have been exposed to. It revolves around smacking the bad guy in the melon. Check it out, works well.

Well I'm 5'9" and go about 238 lbs. I played a little Linebacker / Full Back for the local police football league. I've been in better health. But, I have never been out run in a foot chase. You better hope the K-9 gets to ya first. Daddy's coming, he's pissed and "I dont need no stinking gun"
