Read the citation to see if there are instructions on how to handle it

Does anyone else get the feeling that this is a trap?

Best way to get that answered would be to go to the department you had contact with and ask them.  None of us here can accurately discuss what the towns ordinances are or their requirements.

Now why would you bring sense and logic into such a discussion?

Did you really just leave your child sitting in a car?

Not enough information to thelp you, every place I know has you sign a citation, if you did not sign anyting and received a citation go with Scurge's answer.  Check the citation for a phone number and call it and ask about fines, etc.

This sounds odd, normally for the type of incident you mentioned the citation would be issued on the spot.  If, for some reason the citation was not issued immediately, an officer would come to your residence or contact you and issue a citation in person.  About the only time a citatin would be isued by mail would be if you lived a long ways from where the incident occured (well outside that jurisdiction) and there was an initial question as to whether to issue a citation or not.  then a citation would be sent by regestered mail, return receipt required, to be sure you actually got the citation, but this is very rare and usually occurs in the case of traffic accidents.  Like i said initially,  the non-citation issue on scene definately sound odd to me.

He/She didn't answer a very valid question posed by rarebit:

Did you really just leave your child sitting in a car?

And helloooooooooooooo!  read what the officer gave you... it'll tell you if it was a warning or a citation and if a citation there is a freakin' phone number for you to call that department!  OMG  If you did leave your child in the car unattended I hope you are charged with child neglect.  I have a feeling you were left with a complaint card... what you need to do is wait for a visit from child protective services and possibly juvenile detectives.

I'm going to make a wild guess ( and definately a guess) and say tht this was a city ordinance vilation not a child endamgerment case.  Also the officer did not know the proper muncipal code for the violation and could not issue the citation at the time.  However these are just guesses on guesses, give the OP was released and nothing done at the scene.

Yeah It was very strange... This happened saturday afternoon and I havent gotten a call or letter yet. The officer took my info and rushed off. He had gotten a alert over his radio that there was someone shop lifting and he just left really fast. I never signed any thing.. I did ask him before he left was a citation was and he said it was a ticket. But I figured I would of just got one on the spot..

You could be right. Or, the Officer could have gathered his info to present to the prosecutor for possible charges. Here we can issue a summons or warrant at a later date.

Donna and rarebit poted a very valid question "Did you really just leave your child sitting in a car???" Here's a few follow up questions:

Where was this at: A store, mall, fast food place, home?

What was the weather conditions? Hotter than blazes, colder than the artic?

What were you thinking??

Yes I did leave my child in car for 2 mins while paying for gas. I am a single mom and the car was locked. I didnt know it was a endangerment to her bc one it's not hot so she wouldnt get hot while i ran into the gas station. I am very disapointed in myself and I am just looking for answers.

No more signatures here. We just check the box that applies. We served them, they were booked and I forget the other. I never check the other.  Infractions are a little different. Served is the only one I check on those.  Leaving a child (under 16) in a motor vehicle here is a criminal cite. Officer discretion as to book or not.  Our cites have instructions.  If this one is being sent by mail then I am guessing there will be instructions on how to handle it

They say hindsight is 20/20. From an officer's point of view, so many things could go bad here. Weather is just one of them. We had a case in a nearby township where a lady ran some clothes into the laundromat leaving her sleeping child in the car (doors locked). When she returned a "few minutes" later, the child and car were gone!!  Happy ending though. The bad guy realized there was a child in the car, parked it and ran. The child and car were located safe and sound within a half hour of the original incident. Could have turned out like a bad movie!

As far as what the officer's intent is, you probably won't find the answer here. Laws vary from state to state. In some states, it could result in a citation, while other states require an arrest. I would suggest trying to contact the officer too see what you should expect, but that's up to you.

Please, I hope you never do this again. Aside from the obvious your child could reach over and put something in their mouth. Two minutes can be really long if you are a child. I am sorry you are a single parent but take your child with you. Kids can get into a lot of trouble in just a few moments. It`s the same thing as leaving a infant in the tub while you answer the phone. I have run errands with my two kids alone many times. I never once left them alone in the car.

Maybe enroll yourself in a parenting class before you get in front of the judge. They have ones you can take online. The judge may see this as making an effort on your part and perhaps be more lenient on you.

Well, patchworks, since you feel so "horrible" about leaving your child alone in a car long enough to come to the attention of the authorities, why don't you NOW do the LEOs here the respect of detailing what happened?

I mean, so as not to treat their advisements as a sort of 'convenience'?  So you don't look neglectful AGAIN out of convenience to yourself???

Get this.  You are arrested when an officer issues you a citation.  Your signature on a citation releases you on your own recognizance pending your appearance in court.  It would surprise me if citations are issued for the sort of neglect you describe.

Wake up.  Since you didn't consider the neglect incident worthy of noting enough to recall anything except random issuance of a 'signature-less citation' -  remedy your compounded neglectful attitude and help your strange little 'call for advice' to pass the sniff test here.

So provide details.  Otherwise - PHEW!!  Somebody open a WINDOW!!

Umm, I'm satisfied with her explanation. I don't condone this, but I can certainly understand it. To jump her bones and pass judgment for this seems a bit harsh to me.  If she was sitting in a bar with her kid in the parking lot for 3 hours, or something similar, then by all means, swing the hammer! But c'mon, she ran inside to pay for gas. Taking that strictly on face value, I would not write a cite for that. I may contact CPS and strongly advise her never to do it again, but I'm not gonna slap the cuffs on! lol Irresponsible? Yes. Criminal? Not in my opinion. As far as the cite not being issued yet, we'll often do the same thing for a case such as this. If the officer/deputy chooses to not cite on site (like that? lol) then they'll write up a report and forward it to the CA's office for their review. If the CA's decide charges are applicable, then they'll issue an NTA/Summons. This will be served by a civil deputy though, not mailed. I'm sure everyone else has similar protocols/procedures.

I would have written a citation as well.  I don't agree with leaving your child in the car unattendend.  But, that is just me!  Anything can happen.. use your head!

Maybe because it took so many tries to get bits of info... and finally get a hazy picture of what happened.  Oh, and because she was asked questions and picked the not so hard ones to answer before we finally got what happened out of her.

Now I sent her a PM... as noted in my prior reply and she and I have had at least 3 back and forth replies... Still no introduction.
