Tell me what you think about the Military Police Corps Soldiers who are deployed and performing a Law enforcement mission in Iraq and are killed. Should there be a branch of the ODMP for them? For example and MP in Bagdad is responding to a traffic accident and is killed by a roadside bomb. Next scenario and MP at Fort Drum NY is responding to a traffic accident and is killed as his vehicle (for unknown reasons) leaves the roadway. As is stands now in scenario B that MP is entitled to be honored on the ODMP but Not the MP in scenario A. What do you think? Is there an easy solution?

I think we have pretty much established that MPs are considered LEO, therefore I don't think there needs to be a distinction of whether s/he dies as the result of a stateside action, or war action. As long as the death meets the definition of honorable (other than criminal or suicide, I guess)... I would support inclusion on ODMP. Just my opinion.

I'm going to say yes and no on this. Having been deployed and performed LE here in the US, its two totally different animals. ODMP is reserved for law enforcement. I hate to say it, but military police are not law enforcement in Iraq, if patrolling outside the wire, they are a soldier. Now, if a MP soldier working LE on say, LSA Anaconda is killed by another soldier or a terrorist on the base at some crazy incident, then yes I think ODMP applies, as that MP is in their LE role when that occurs.
We had this argued locally for the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Memorial, and MPs killed overseas and being placed on the memorial was shot down, reason being, those soldiers names would be applied to wartime/combat memorials at Fort Carson and elsewhere.
Maybe a soluton to the ODMP is for a special section for military law enforcement killed during combat operations. Both duties are obviously honorable, but I don't see ODMP being the place to honor them if killed in combat, ODMP is for peace officers killed doing law enforcement.

Travis this sounds like a viable and reasonable option.

Being in the military law enforcement field myself I have done both in Iraq. I have done Law and Order on LSA Anaconda (Balad) and have done convoy missions outside the wire. When outside the wire we conducted security for the convoy and completed sweep and clear missions throught the little towns. I do agree with Lawdawg about maybe a special section in ODMP to honor those whose gave the ultimate sacrafice outside the wire.

I worked as a raid team with the marines as an MP...Not your everyday MP duties but owell huh! I do have to agree with Trav though. very well put I must say. MP's have two duties. We have to switch between them from time to time.

Military Police should be on the ODMP

Let's take a look and the title Military Police. Hense they are both MILITARY members and POLICE officers. I feel they SHOULD be recognized no matter what. What really sux is that we even have to have this type of discussion. By that I mean "was the MP killed in the line of duty here or there" Too many of our brothers and sisters are being killed in thier prime. Stay Safe EVERYONE
