Well everyone, had a tel-con today and one of the topics was the hiring of new handlers.  At this time there about a dozen or so positions that need to be back filled at various airports which will receive the cert lists from the most recent vacancy announcement by late March/Early April.  Some of the airports include Honolulu, JFK (NYC), Boston Logan, and several others.  Still waiting on the budget to be passed in order to hire on the new positions.  Keep checking back for updates.

Thanks for the update Ed.  I doubt Sioux Falls, SD made the list?  I figured it will take awhile for the process to get going with the amount of applicants that probably applied.  Either way I'm in it for the long haul.  Look forward to your future updates.

Learned today that TSA receieved well over 100,000 applications.  There will be approximately 100 additional positions over the next 1-2 years.  Cert lists will be issued soon and not until then will each airport selected to receive new teams be notified.  Please be aware although the recent vacany announcements listed many locations, not all will receieve teams.  Also, if anyone has already taken the written exam for an EDCH position, your results are good for 12 months, therefore will not have to retake it.

Well in another forum I'm hearing that internal applicants are getting reviewed in some areas and took the KSA tests.  But nothing on external applicants.  Any updates or new news that you are aware of Ed?  Thanks.

From by position I really do not know how the selections from internal versus external applicants is being decided.  Since my airport has been pushed back to FY13-14  for new hires, I have not yet been given a cert list for review.  The other six stations that have received thier cert lists should have received both internal and external lists from which they may select from to interview and further progress through he hiring proces.  I do not know yet however if the cert lists issued consist of names of persons who have already taken the writing assessment or still have yet to have taken it.  Will get back to you on that.

My status on USAJOBS just changed today from received application to reviewing applications.  So whatever that means....  :)  No status changed in the TSA dashboard.  The bad thing is I'll be moving away from the location I put in for.....anyone know if it is possible to update your status via the TSA HR dept?

I realize there are many questions out there still looking for answers, and I will continue to do my best in meeting that demand. Therefore I will try to be on this site every Tue, Wed, and Thu somewhere between the hours of 1800-2000hrs est. Additionally, I will be logged into Skype, ID edsantos1227, during the same hours for IM and calls.

Okay... So it's been quite some time since I have been on here posting some info. Sorry about that. That, however, has not prevented many of you from reaching out to me via other avenues. Amazing what the internet and word of mouth can do. The main reason for my absence has been due to the delay in TSA's start up in hiring new personnel. Well as of late that has all changed. We are hiring at alarming rate since we have been looking forward to bringing new teams on with emphasis on other areas within the transportation network. The newest teams will be utilized in a similar yet different capacity than that of the earlier teams. Unfortunately, for security reasons I cannot go into any more detail than that. I can say however, these teams will be opened up to a slightly broader exposure to varying environments.

Some of the common questions that I continue to get, which have already been answered, pertain to the Law Enforcement status of our Inspectors. We are now and will continue to be NON Sworn LE. That is Investigator, Inspector, non-gun carrying, non-arresting federal employees. I must insist that anyone who is seeking a traditional LE positions seek elsewhere as that is not the agency's intention at this time.

Another common request I receive is for advice. As much as I wish I could give sound advice via emails and this forum, it is difficult since each you and your situations are so unique. I have taken and made numerous calls from many of you and have tried my best to give you the best advice I could. In order to give advice, I need specific questions to answer.

"Just graduated from college....what are my chances....how long does the process take?" These are far too difficult to answer. Once you, on your own merits, make the best qualified list, successfully complete the written assessment and are scheduled for an interview, will your chances be determined. Sure, I suppose college can help (it certainly cannot hurt), but it is not a deciding factor. Interviews are a very valuable and powerful tool in our decision making process. I have been on numerous interview boards in TSA for K9 Handler positions and other positions. The interview has a huge impact on the overall decision. I cannot stress that enough. It is the time to sell yourself and your strengths, but the trick is to do so without sounding cocky. A challenging feat for some people. The process in its entirety varies immensely from office to office. Therefore, I cannot give you a clear answer on that question. I know at my office, we like to fill our positions as quickly as possible. Some offices like to take their time.

AKHill, about how long after you submitted your application did it take for you to hear back about the written assessment test? I've put in several applications for various positions but haven't gotten past the "resume received" part on the dashboard timeline.

Ed, do you have any information on how long the process could take or any reasons why my application process never seems to get past resume received? It'd be nice to know that either I'm not qualified or I'm not best qualified for a job.
