Hello All,

I have passed the written exam and I have to take my physical performance test in about a month when the weather breaks.  I am hitting the gym hard to make sure that I am prepared for the exam.  When I was in High School playing football we used to take pre-workout supplements like NO Explode and NANO Vapor.  I was considering taking one of these supplements just to give myself a boost in the gym.  My question is.........I have heard that the creatine in these supplements can cause you to fail a drug test?  I'm not sure what to beleive.  I didn't think creatine was illegal so how could it cause me to fail a drug test?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!  I just thought I would ask around before I take one of these supplements and possibly ruin my shot at finally getting into a Law Enforcement Agency.  Thanks for all your time and help.

Sincerely,

Justin Haynes

Creatine supplements taken long ago shouldn't pose a problem. Creatine breaks down into creatinine, which is a something they test for normal levels of to make sure you aren't trying to alter the test results by diluting the sample (e.g. by drinking lots of water in the run-up to the test or adding water directly to the sample). Taken within days of the test it may elevate creatinine levels, but the same could happen if you ate red meat for lunch and dinner for a whole week. I'm not sure who told you this, but I suppose it's possible that if you took a creatine supplement in days leading up to the test (stress: possible, not probable) it could elevate levels enough that they might suspect you're trying to alter the test results. They test for other things in addition to creatinine (i.e. specific gravity, pH, color, etcetera) to determine the quality of the sample. If there's something abnormal about the sample that prevents them from having confidence in the analysis then they may count that as a fail.

To make a long story short, if you want to be extra cautious, you should probably avoid those supplements altogether if you're random-tested and in the days leading up to the test if you are given notice--but they aren't illegal, per se. If they make it appear as if you're trying to intefere with testing and if they don't grant a re-test, you can indeed ruin your chances. For what it's worth, I've never heard of anyone failing a drug test for ELEVATED creatinine levels. If you're otherwise clean, you have nothing to worry about.

You should not worry. I personally do not know of any type of creatine what would resemble any form of the standardized panel of drugs that are tested for. And I shall pose this question to the lab techs at the forensic testing laboratory that I coordinate with. I work with both civilian and military drug testing as part of my daily job and have never had a case of a positive for supplements in the thousands of tests that were submitted through my office. And back when I was a gym rat I used to utilize supplements and never had any issues with them during testing.  If you have an edge, albeit a legal one, when you are competing against a large number of applicants, then it can only help you. Hope that this info helps you.

thanks for the help. I assumed that the information i received before was false but i figured that it couldnt hurt to ask the LEO community. I plan on taking the supplement up until my performance test. The drug test will be sometime after that, so i'll just stop taking it after the examination. Thanks for all your help and information, it is greatly appreciated! If anyone has anything else to add or any new information and opinions, I'm all ears! Thanks again and stay safe out there!

If my memory serves me correctly I heard that "jacked" or however you spell it, was causing people to test positive for meth. How frequently does that happen I have no clue. As usual uncle d is right, just call and ask, but most supplements shouldn't cause a fail on a drug test. I'd say just avoid them as most of them have so much crap that are bad for you as it is you'll be better off just eating healthy and working out on a regualr basis.

Hydrate well and you'll have plenty of energy. It makes a world of difference for me when I stay hydrated.

Good luck
