I’m curently a student at a flight academy in Illinois and was wondering what kind of pre-requisites are usually needed to join a law enforcement agency as a pilot, preferably as a fixed wing pilot. I know there are a lot more demands for rotorcraft pilots but I was not planning on getting that rating. Right now I’m a private pilot working on my instrument and commerical ticket, then getting my commerical multi-engine, certified flight instructor, multi-engine instructor, and Instrument Instructor ratings. I also would like to add, that I am finishing up a 2 year degree in Aviational Science at a local college if that helps as well! Thanks in advance everyone!

Also, I talked to my old wrestling coach from highschool who was a trooper for the state of Nevada and he said for them, you go in as a pilot. Are all departments like this or do some require you to work as a patrol officer first? Either way I don't mind!

The California Highway Patrol has a number of fixed wing and rotorwing aircraft throughout the state. In order to become a pilot or flight officer, you must first become an Officer with the Department. It is a great duty - I worked in Air Ops in 1970. Here is the recruitment page for the CHP:

You can contact a recruitment officer and s/he can answer any questions you may have concerning duty with the CHP.
