Slight high jack of the Glock vs sprinfield thread. I've been looking into these two weapons and both seem to be very well liked. Opinions?

I voted Springfield because I own an XD .40 4 inch model. Love this weapon. I have heard a lot of great things about the M & P, alot. I would love the opportunity to fire both side by side. I fired the XD .40 side by side with the Glock and prefer the XD. Now I wouldn't throw a Glock away in a pinch, but if given the choice the XD.

Like TL I have never shot the XD but I do own an M&P. I cant speak for Sprinfield Armory but from what I know customer service from Smith and Wesson is second to none. The M&P is very comfertable to me and I prefer it over my (issued) glock. I havent heard anything negative about the XD. I think you would be well served with either weapon. But the M&P is made in America.

Have fired both, and owned the S&W Compact 9mm....really liked this pistol. Not fond of the XD, didn't feel right and it is nearly as ugly as a Glock!

I have never fired the S&W MP, however I know for a fact I'm comfortable and like the Springfield XD

Ive shot both of these, and they are both excellent weapons. However I choose the XD over the M&P. Although the removable backstraps were cool on the M&P, I thought the XD felt more "natural" in my hand.If you want the removable backstrap on an XD you need to uprade to XDM. Add a hogue grip to it and it feels like a natural extension. Also, M&P felt.....for lack of a better word, cheap when I held it. I could almost bend the receiver in with the magazine out....or it felt like it would give way. I dont know....just my opinion. I also liked how my XD felt like a 1911.

I've owned both.  My Dept. issues the M&P 40 so that is what I carry on & off duty.

Love the way the XD shoots. I have had the XD40 and really liked it. The Smith and Wesson looks nicer in my opinion. So I guess it depends on what you are buying for. Just something to have fun with at the range, collect, maybe pass down to someone... Or are you looking for something youre going to carry on duty and trust with your life. In that case I'd go with the Springfield.

Why would you not trust the M&P? It is by no means a gun that you would hang on the wall, so to speak.

Have not shot the M&P but I have shot my Brother-In-Law's XD a few times and to be honest...I don't think it's even close to my Walther p99 .40. I've heard good things about the XDM but I'm telling you the P99 is a Cadillac!!

Waiting on my new M&P Pro Series 40 to arrive. Will post after pressing off a few hundred rounds. Very good reveiws on this one vs negative. Still hard to give up the .357 model 19  wheel gun as for as dependability if you know what I mean.

Cannot speak on the XD personally, do not own one but my son-in-law does and loves it. He has the XDM in .40. As for the M&P .40, mine arrived last week and after 200 rounds I love it. Very sweet just need to get used the the very good trigger. I purchased the Pro Series model that has a better trigger (S&W states has been tuned up??) Very good fit in the hand just like an extension of the hand. You have three different size grip pads to use. The medium fits me best so far. Trigger reset is very short and trigger pull is around 4 to 4.5 pounds. I plan on using this in IDPA. Also came with tritium night sights. I cannot say that I would prefer one over the other at this time. Guns are just tools and it is a personal preference and reliability on what we use. Some say "Dewalt" others say "Millwaukie" ect. it all depends on what you like, how it performs for you and lastley DEPENDABILITY!

In my opinion the Springfield XDM feels better in my hands than the S&W M&P. I own the XDM in 9mm and have trained with the M&P. Both are excellent weapons and are very similar. The XDM just feels better. I especially like its safety features. My XDM holds 19+1 in the 9mm. If I can't kill what I am shooting at with 20 then I don't need to be holding the weapon. My money is (literally) on the XDM.

This is an interesting thread.  I did a ton of research on the two before I chose the M&P 40.  It is the most accurate semi I have ever fired, and has a sweet trigger pull.  Mine is 15+1, tritrium sights and no external safety.

Hey Cholla, sounds just like mine. I did the same routine, looked at all reveiws and chose the M&P .40 Pro Series. Seemed a little light without being loaded up but a very good choice for me. I have a Beretta 92F that I can almost drive tacks at 15 yards. But the M&P is so much sweeter in the hand. The most reliable in my bunk is my old S&W Model 19 wheel gun .357 mag that I got from my brother. I have a good feeling about this new M&P!
