Dick Winters' time in the military is the main theme of Band of Brothers. It was his story, along with his company.

R.I.P. Major Winters. Your story and the portrayal of it in the series brought about a deeper appreciation of the sacrifice that was made by your generation during WWII. It  also had the additional effect of creating a better sense of appreciation of Veterans of all wars by the younger generations. Godspeed, sir.

Like Joshua Chamberlain, Dick Winters was a magnificent example of what Stephen Ambrose called the "Citizen Soldier"...the non-professional who rose from obscurity to lead men in times of deadly peril.

My favorite line from Band of Brothers...when leading his men into Bastogne and a retreating infantry officer tells him they have been cut off and are now encircled...."We're Airborne; we're supposed to be surrounded."

And how loyal his friends were to his dying day - says so much about the man.  He wanted his privacy until the very end . I'm so grateful he shared his story and so much of himself with all of us. Telling that story for those that can't or won't.   What a truly remarkable and amazing man that I had the pleasure to live near and to meet.  I will never forget you.  Rest in Peace Sir.
