I currntly live in Wisconsin in a mid-sized city and take care of my folks, while getting my CJ degree and an IT degree, but I am applying to Illinois, Washington D.C., New Orleans amoung many other states and lager cities. I have applided for a ridealong where I live, but I know that it is not going to be what I can expect from the larger cities that I would prefure to work in, nor do I plan on staying in town. Do I bother doing it in a city that only slightly repersents what I can expect or should I take some vaction time, set up ridealongs and travle to the cities that I want to work in? I assume that it will be pretty different from where I live, but would it still be worth doing it here? I know about half of the LEOs in my city and I think it would be a little wierd doing it here, since they are the ones who watched me grow up from a street punk to the woman that I am today. I think it might be better to do this with a stranger, who has no preconcieved notions about me. Does that make any sence? Does it really matter where I do my first ridealong? V.

There are different types of Law Enforcement and what you see on a Ride-Along will be different...... if go with a City/State/County/Local agency.

Some People realize..... after a Ride-Along that everything is not like "CSI Miami" and decide to switch to another career goal.

Personally, I suggest doing as many varied ride-alongs as you can get............. if information for your schooling is your goal.

Thank you for the answers, and yes I understand why my first post was confusing. So look at it this way, I live in a mid-sized town but am applying to very large cities. Will a ridealong in my hometown be comparable to the cities that I am applying too?

I do not watch 'cop' shows and I have wanted to become an officer most of my life (like my uncles) and  now I have the chance to do just that. While I am a CJ student, I am also an IT student. I have no idea what it is like to do what you do, I know I have a lot to learn, that is why I asked.

You said you have Uncles who are in Law Enforcement, are they local you can request a ride along in their city?

Will a ride along  in your small town be comparable to a ride along in a big city, maybe not.  Some days in your town it might be Busy or super slow adn the opposite @ the town over...  I'd suggest doing as many ride alongs as you can, at least that is what I am doing.
