I don't have the answers. Can anyone out there help? I have a very good friend who is thinking about joining LE with me when he gets out of the military. We are stationed together. We are both Air Force cops. He asked me a question I didn't know? He wanted to know what the rules were on previous drug use from when he was younger. He was never arrested or anything like that. But he did drugs growing up. Obviously he had stopped or he wouldn't be able to pass the random drug tests we take in the Air Force. He said it had been about three years since he had done it and he has another two to three years left before he gets out. Can you help me explain this answer to him?

That all really depends on what kind of drugs he had taken. Did he ever have to go to rehab for it? What where the reasons for the drug use? How long did he use for? Was is just a one time thing or did it continue over a period of time. Was he addicted to it?

From what I know... No rehab, no addiction. He did it recreationally in clubs, parties. He did X a few times.

He is a good kid now, I trust him with my life, everyday. I do know that he had been tempted to do lots of other things but he says he never has. Things such as meth, coke, etc.

Alot of departments are gonna be turned off by him. Many departments might view him as a liability due to his use of X and being tempted to use meth, coke, etc. These are not just a little joint that he tried a couple of times. These are hard drugs that are extremely addicting. Depts. are more likely to excuse some marijuana use, but not anything else. But thats just my opinion

Not necesarrily disqualifying, but doesn't look real good either.

As previously stated, it will all depend on the department.

Drug useage policies vary from department to department. Agencies will not usually give out the exact time frame of what is acceptable because people would just lie about how long it has been. Tell 'your friend' to stay clean, as a previous recruiter and a polygraph examiner I have seem many military guys recently who get out and celebrate by use illegal drugs. Misdemeanor drugs are not a big deal in small amounts however the felony drugs are taken much more seriously with most agencies. Make sure he tells the truth right up front about his use or he will or could be disqualified. Remember that agencies talk to one another as well as the military. Good Luck

If your "friend" was popping ecstasy he's sure going to have a hard time explaining that to a hiring board...especially if it was only a couple years ago, regardless of if he was in the military. We were told that if you smoked weed like seven or eight years ago it was fine so long as you owned up to it...but other than that and you're screwed. I would think that your "friend" sure is going to have a tough time....

Like the other guys said...depends on the departments standards but, where I work, (Long Island) the fact that he tried x would get him disqualified...even marijuana use...more than 10 times...goodby.
