Posted almost 6 years ago Depends on the department where you get hired. The S.O. I serve with the LEOs have to have been an officer for at least five years, and meet the requirements of the team and pass the interview and physical. The tactical medics have to have the same, plus go to the Tactical EMS classes. Getting a criminal justice degree would help you in your job search.

Posted almost 6 years ago Check the back pages, this has been answered several times before. Short answers: Something "human" related in college: Soc, Psych, Crim.Just., even Management. Emphasis on English - you'll be writing.....alot. SWAT qualifications are agency specific. Normally, you won't be able to roll right into it. Usually a few years in, and once some get there, they have different interests. Don't be discouraged - Good things come....

Posted almost 6 years ago Morgan. What would help you is if your area has an Explorer Program that you could enter. That will give you a taste of what police work is all about. When you go to collage you would of course major in Criminal Justice and play heavy on the Law courses. Having a Law Degree is something very nice to be able to fall back on, or if you discover being a cop is not for you. As for the SWAT team, you really need not worry about that right now. That will come a few years down the road if you decide you want to do that AND you are picked up by the team if there is an opening. Understand that the team plays a huge role in who gets on the team as you have to be pretty tight with them because you will really depend on them for your life. SWAT is not all it is cracked up to be. Lots of boring training that is repetitive and difficult. You are also always on call and even when you are called out you hope that you are not needed. Understand that if you are the sniper you may have to kill someone who is presenting no danger to you personally. Can you do something ;like that? Think hard because it is a lot harder to do that then to respond with deadly force to save your butt and that of your partner and friends. In addition, as a female you will hear all kinds of insults that will be very cruel and hurtful, the scum out there really know how to push the right buttons, even for us males but the females take special abuse. I do not wish to discourage you as being a cop is a wonderful career and life. Just understand it is not a cake-walk.

Posted almost 6 years ago I said this in another thread and Im gonna stick with it, I think psychology would be a good course. It may help you to understand the minds of the people that may want to harm you, maybe tell when people are lying or behavioral characteristics criminals might exhibit, all sorts of useful stuff that I would not neglect. If you do not then I would recommend you self educate, it could only help. Good luck with college and your career and stay safe.
