Sitting in Algebra 2 my teacher told me that every professional uses Parabola's and if so could someone tell me how leo's might use them.  I have never met a cop that has used them. But maybe someone on policelink has and could explain to me how leo's can make use of them.

Bullet drop compensation?

WOW... Nice topic.

I wish I could elaborate on it, but won't do so to prevent the upcoming upsetting antagonic responses of Math haters in the Site...

The Parabola is the Geometric representation of an Equation of the Second Degree in Algebra. (Power of 2) More precise, it is a Conic Section, dating back to the times of the ancient Greek civiliazation. (Conic Sections = Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola. The Circle is only a special case of an Ellipse)

As someone with a Physics background I can tell you I use them often... In complex situations I won't even get into, but as a very simple sample: Ballistics and Lab work.

Remember, the path of a bullet is in fact a Parabola, not a straight line, as many tend to believe.

Some much more complex samples would be the NTSB, (path of a falling Plane in some circumstances) the ATF (Path of Fragmentation) among other Federal Agencies. Finally, it's use in the Military is almost everywhere: In every weapon, in every battlefield, Land, Air and Sea.

Thanks that made since to me. I didn't think about lab work and ballistics.

Sorry Kiddo, I was lucky to get out of H.S. algerbra and didn't have to take it in college. I am one of the math hating LEO's BrooklynHillsCop was talking about. I was going to have to wait for my kid to get home to ask him what the heck you were talking about !  Thanks for the explanation Frank!!!!!

Lol  I wish I would've gotten that lucky. I am not good at math like this at all. I actually hate math but the simple stuff lmao. But I set off to prove to the teacher that leo's don't use this kinda stuff but now I am proving her right. So now I will have to tell her you were right and try to get a glaspe on it and see if i can understand it. And I couldn't of explained it so I am glad that "BrooklynHillsCop" could. Thanks for explaining that

Hey, for those that may want to dig a little deeper, here's a nice video about the Conic Sections:

Frank, you are the one with the degree in Physics, mine is in Psyc, remember just looking at problems like that scare me !! hahaha. Although, now that Shani is in 6th grade, I guess I'll have another chance to get a grasp on math. (On second thought, I think I'll let her Dad continue to be the math tutor !!!) hahaha

I think I will pass on that lol. It looks kinda complicated and I don't want to do any more complicated stuff untill I need to.

I agree with you they scare me too lmao. But now that I actually know they have a purpose I will try to get a grasp on them. Heck who knows maybe one day somebody will ask me something like this and I can tell them the answer thanks to the members of policelink

Very accessible video, too--although I wish youtube had a way to control playback speed. I don't know if I would've made it through the whole video without the groovy background music.

Once i attended a conference given by a local police chief. The chief ssid and I wont ever forget it, "The reason I became a cop is because I sucked at math and didmt know what else to do in life and here I am today". I remember that speech like it was yesterday. See and thats why i do the same job, haha....

One thing that I think math helps with is logical thinking. Everything in math has a rule and a formula. If you put the pieces together right, you will solve the problem. That type of logical thinking is crucial in law enforcement. It will help you put the pieces of a puzzle together in a crime and will help you solve it.

I substitute teach for general math and algebra sometimes on my days off. Kids ask me the same question. I always tell them that the radar only gives me a vehicle's speed. I have to do the math to see how much over they were going. If they are going 35 MPH and you are in a 25 MPH zone, how much over were they going? They usually just stare at me blankly until I tell them I'm joking.

I should have chosen a video showing only graphics and no equations… Sorry.
When I try to explain the complex ideas of the Mathematics involving Motion to the non-math-minded-individuals I usually use only graphics.

This video is easier to understand: It shows only Graphics, and nicely enough, it shows the motion of a plane cutting the Conic Sections on 3D and right next to it, the corresponding motion in 2D.
As a footnote: Please remember you couldn’t be using that PC (or Mac, if you have so) if it wasn’t for a bunch of “weird” individuals that love Math…
(or Electricity, or your Car, or your phone, or even the food you buy at the Supermarket)
Yes, your Computer language is strictly mathematical, (Binary Code) so say thanks to all those weird individuals that love Math…

I'm more of an arithmatic kind of guy.  Problems like how many hours of OT will it take to buy the new kimber I've been wanting.

One of my son's is working on a master's degree in mathmatics.  To him it's the best thing in the world.  Me?  well I just ask my son LOL

OW!  Frank you made my head hurt!!  Why on earth would you do such a thing??

Very good information, though.  A little over my head maybe, but very good information nonetheless.  I'm just too much of a dumb schmuck to be able to make any sense of it.
