Me and my partner went to a Jack in the Box for lunch one time. Got in paid, sat down to eat, got a few bites into our meal when a hot call came out just around the corner. A lady with a knife. Threw everything in the trash, out the door and into the car and my partner says to me, " you could've brought it with you". LOL!! Oh well. I am know trained to eat my meal very fast.

Had a friend that I was in the explorer program with a few years back. He went full time with the same dept he and I were explorers with. I think he has just out the Academy and on the job for maybe a couple weeks. He goes into a Denny's and on his way out he goes to pay his check and finds out their is no police discount on the check. Of course this is off duty so he pulls his badge out and they still refuse to give it to him. My friend just goes nuts and the restaurant has to call the local sheriff's dept to come and ask him to leave. He was fired a week later.

You wouldn't go in there for a million bucks...A Cop does it for less...A Reserve does it for free....

I have been working since I was 16 and my first job was a cashier at hardees and then I became their opening manager before going to nursing school.. we always gave the uniformed discounts.. up to 50% off just as courtesy...and I always gave them free coffee.. they never expected it really but did appreciate. I hate when people expect stuff just because..

Back in the early 70's the new guys would get used uniforms out of the property room until they could order you your own.  I was just out of the academy and the first day on the job with my FTO.   I had on my only white shirt, which was new, used uniform pants and what they called a car coat.

For lunch my FTO stopped at a Burger King and I ordered a big burger and fries.   I took the first bite out of it and the tomato fell out of the bun along with a bunch of katchup and landed on the front of my shirt.    I had to work the rest of the shift looking like I had been shot.

A few  years later I was a FTO with a young rookie in the car with me.  It was a midnight shift and it was snowing up a storm.  Calls had slowed down so we stopped at the local 7-11 and got some coffee.  As we sat in a parking lot of an apartment complex drinking our coffee and doing reports.  A call came out, officer needs assistance, shots fired.    I take off toward the call code 3 as I toss my coffee out of the window.    We are flying down the road and the rookie is hanging on with one hand and a large coffee in the other.  I yell at him to get rid of the coffee, he too throws his coffee out the window.   Or at least he tried to,  his window was closed.  SPLASH !!!!!   OH SH*T I hear him say.  I look over and he has coffee dripping off the brim of his hat and nose.    I couldn't help but laugh.  Fact is, here we are screaming down the road code 3 laughing like a couple idiots.   ( By the way, the Officer needs assistance turned out just fine.  Officer OK bad guy DOA)

We get offered a discount around the county, but never free food.  I never ask for a discount and if it's given then I usually put the remaining balance as a tip to server or throw the difference in the container for whatever charity is being collected for.

I have had an incident where I made the mistake of going through the drive through in my patrol car and upon receipt of my food I examined it and found that it had been doctored.  I stopped and went back into the fast food place and spoke with the manager about it, showed it to her and she proceeeded to give me freebe's.  I refused and asked her what she was going to do to the employee?  I was told nothing because though it was clearly tampered with she could not prove which one had done it.  I explained that the young man there standing at the condiment table would be where I would start my investigation.  Long story short I got no cooperation.  I called our local Health Department and complained and then called corporate.  Found out from State Health agency that it was not the first complaint and the biz was shut down.

The ultimate happy was about two months later our agency did a search warrant on an address and arrested the very young man behind the condiment counter and the former manager for drug sales.  I said nothing to either one, but gloated in my own personal revenge.  I was just lucky...

I answered the poll a long time ago, but a family member mentioned something of interest.

The family member works at Starbucks and says she regularly gives free drinks to police officers. However, if they take advantage of it by assuming it will be free, she charges them!

I say if you are offered it, take it, but don't abuse the privilege. The businesses may feel "used" if you go in there assuming you will not pay.

While on inactive reserves I have been riding a lot with different FTO's. One day we walked into Arby's and the FTO walked in to use the restroom before ordering his food. Out of being the kind, respectful individual I am I held the door for him, and also another man exiting. The guy saw that I was with the officer so he stopped me and started asking me questions about the tint on his car. The officer had time to get out of the bathroom, wait in line, order his food, get his drink, sit down with his food, and eat about half of his sandwich before I was even able to get in line. I ordered my food and as soon as I sat down I took one bite and we had a call for a domestic...fails to say that the rest of my 6.00 roast beef sandwich went in the trash and off we went.

I worked during the time when almost all food places either gave you a discount or free. I could understand why and has I been an owner I would also have feed the guys for free. Not only are they great people and the insurance against robbery was well worth it, I also appreciated what the guys did. Still, we always paid what was on the ticket and never argued with the owner and did not even say anything unless we were where nobody could see and hear and then we would thank them but let them know it is greatly appreciated but I would rather pay full price. I would not argue after I made that point, once and once only. After that I would just pay whatever the bill said and leave a tip that would cover the discount plus a tip. The waitress could either [pay the rest of the tab or take it as a tip, I just know I paid my tab. This was also very hard to do because yes there were times when we did not get a chance to eat our meal and times when we did not get a chance to eat and even more times when I could not afford to. <G>

I imagine 'doctoring' of the food happens quite a bit? Aren't you guys scared to eat out while in uniform? I'd be bagging it every day or maybe eat somewhere buffet style.

Never used the drive through.  Fact is I normally didn't eat at locations that I could not see the food being made on the spot. Mostly sub shops where they cooked everythig right in front of the people at the counter.  Or places like the 7 11 where I fixed my own hot dog or got pre packaged meals.  Most ofter I brown bagged and only got coffee.  I have never had anyting doctored that I am aware of but I know others that have.  One Officer saw a guy spit on his meal. He watched the meal from beginning to end and when it was served to him, he walked behind the counter and arrested the jerk.

Had a little old lady give me a cupcake on a ride along recently. The deputy I was riding with wasn't offered one.
