Every once in a while, a local Trooper or Sheriff will
announce to his/her Dispatcher the vehicle Odometer reading.
Is this for a "courtesy" run? Or is it accountability?

Blue some agencies keep track for maint. or what ever. Beginning shift miles end of shift miles. MIles for transport- protects the officer in the event of false claims. There are a number of different reasons but they are all to protect the officer.

Oh! Okay...
I have tried to clear out the other codes,
numbers, and info to find the pattern for
the odometer reading.
Thanks!

We keep up with our own milage. The only time we advise dispatch of our odometer is when we are transporting someone of the opposite sex ........... this is done for our protection against false claims of inappropriate behavior.

Our guys or girls give beginning and ending mileage if transporting anyone of the oposite sex and we give them the time. That way it's on record the time and mileage it took for them to get from point A to point B in case someone files any kind of complaint.

Our agency does it for the CYA stuff too. It only takes one Adam Henry to screw it up for all the others.

We give a begining mileage at the start of the shift then if we transport a prisoner of the opposite sex we give begining and ending mileage. It is to help in the case of allegations against an officer.

We gave the mileage and got a time check on any prisoner transport from the scene and when we arrived at the station. Strictly for accountability and to avoid claims against the transporting officers.

We give starting and ending mileage when transporting a person of the opposite gender (courtesy ride, prisoner, or mental health committment) or juvenile for the reasons rwhite and the others have stated. We also tend to turn on the in-car camera on those transports for the same reasons.

The odometer readings, total daily mileage, fuel, and service items are all written down in our vehicle logs and turned in at the end of the month.

As many stated previously, when it is a juvenile or person of opposite sex that is being transported for whatever reason. For agencies that have Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), this will help tremendously with the accountability since it logs where they have been, if there are any questions.

The reason we do it for everyone is due to an IA complaint that the transporting officers pulled into a parking lot and cleaned the guy's clock. Fortunately, when the tapes and computer printouts were entered into court it showed the guy was a total liar. Saved the two cops from a lot of aggravation and the city a lot of money.
