| Posted almost 3 years ago Some departments require an AA or more before joining. I've never heard of any department requiring a degree to be a K9 handler. Obviously, the first thing you need to do is become a member of the department. Once you've completed your FTO and proabtion period, many departments require 2 to 5 years as an officer before applying for any special duty, such as K9. This gives an officer the chance to learn about the job before moving into something else. During that periond is when you let them know you are interested in canine. In my experience, canine officers are selected from those that are self-starters. Officers that need minimal supervision. It's also my experience there are more applicants for K9 than positions available. Beyond fatigue lies compensatory hypertrophy |
